Abstract

"While women have gained a more prominent role in employment over the past several decades, more work still needs to be done to achieve equality between the sexes. This volume includes five chapters addressing the issues faced by women in the workplace from several perspectives. Chapter One explores the health, social, workplace and financial barriers and facilitators to working beyond state pensionable age in a predominantly female workforce. Chapter Two analyzes gender differences at work such as women's participation in specific working sectors and management positions as well as access to paid work and health services, differences in salaries and working areas and patterns of morbidity among male and female workers. Chapter Three explores selected demographic outcomes, namely the core indicators of fertility, mortality and reproductive health, according to employment status of Syrian refugee women in Turkey. Chapter Four addresses questions of the meaning of equal opportunity in the emerging world of work, its relevancy, and whether equality is even possible. Finally, Chapter Five deals with the issue of work-life balance for female entrepreneurs and mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic"--

Abstract

In Considering Emma Goldman Clare Hemmings examines the significance of the anarchist activist and thinker for contemporary feminist politics. Rather than attempting to resolve the tensions and problems that Goldman's thinking about race, gender, and sexuality pose for feminist thought, Hemmings embraces them, finding them to be helpful in formulating a new queer feminist praxis. Mining three overlapping archives—Goldman's own writings, her historical and theoretical legacy, and an imaginative archive that responds creatively to gaps in those archives —Hemmings shows how serious engagement with Goldman's political ambivalences opens up larger questions surrounding feminist historiography, affect, fantasy, and knowledge production. Moreover, she explores her personal affinity for Goldman to illuminate the role that affective investment plays in shaping feminist storytelling. By considering Goldman in all her contradictions and complexity, Hemmings presents a queer feminist response to the ambivalences that also saturate contemporary queer feminist race theories.

Abstract

"In the first decades of the twentieth century, print-centered organizations spread rapidly across the United States, providing more women than ever before with opportunities to participate in public life. While most organizations at the time were run by and for white men, women-both Black and white-were able to reshape their lives and their social worlds through their participation in these institutions. Organizing Women traces the histories of middle-class women-rural and urban, white and Black, married and unmarried-who used public and private institutions of print to tell their stories, expand their horizons, and further their ambitions. Drawing from a diverse range of examples, Christine Pawley introduces readers to women who ran branch libraries and library schools in Chicago and Madison, built radio empires from their midwestern farms, formed reading clubs, and published newsletters. In the process, we learn about the organizations themselves, from libraries and universities to the USDA extension service and the YWCA, and the ways in which women confronted gender discrimination and racial segregation in the course of their work"--

Abstract

This publication is based on the results of piloting the African Gender and Development Index (AGDI) in 12 African countries across the five subregions of the continent. Making a case for countries to invest in sex disaggregated data collection, the outcomes provide an indication of the general situation of women across the continent. The result of the AGDI trials demonstrate that countries have shown commitment to international, regional and subregional treaties affecting women through overwhelming ratification. The report confirms existing MDG status reports which indicate remarkable progress being made with respect to MDG2 on universal Access to Basic Education. With the aid of systematic collection of sex aggregated data, the report calls for enhanced commitment towards accelerated implementation of gender equality as outlined in frameworks such as the ICPD+15, Beijing+15, the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the African Women's Protocol.--Publisher's description.

Abstract

This book presents ethnographic research conducted in an export zone textile factory in Binzart, Tunisia during the years leading up to the Arab Spring. The author focuses on the sexist management tactics in the factory, as well as women workers’ patterns of resistance and capitulation to sexual objectification and exploitation. Masculinity as enacted by men and by some women is revealed as fundamental to the processes of production. Certain women workers, Oueslati-Porter shows, challenge cisgender norms by appropriating masculinity for themselves, threatening men’s masculine supremacy. Furthermore, socio-cultural surveillance mechanisms in the factory and in the family is curtail the tensions posed by the presence of masculine women. Gender, Textile Work, and Tunisian Women’s Liberation will be of interest to students and scholars of anthropology, sociology, women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, LGBTQ+ studies, and Middle East and North Africa studies. Claire Oueslati-Porter is Senior Lecturer, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Anthropology, University of Miami, USA. .
