Quintus Smyrnaeus' Posthomerica, the only long mythological epic to survive in Greek from the period between Apollonius' Argonautica (3rd century BC) and Nonnus' Dionysiaca (5th century AD), fills in the whole story of the Trojan expedition between the end of Homer's Iliad and the beginning of the Odyssey, which had been treated only episocially by earlier epic and dramatic poets. Composing sometime between the late second and mid-fourth centuries AD, Quintus boldly adapts Homeric diction and style to suit the literary, moral, religious, rhetorical, and philosophical culture of the high Roman Empire and does not hesitate to diverge from the usual versions of the story in order to craft his own narrative vision.

"The sixth book of the Iliad includes some of the most memorable and best-loved episodes in the whole poem: it holds meaning and interest for many different people, not just students of ancient Greek. Book 6 describes how Glaukos and Diomedes, though fighting on opposite sides, recognise an ancient bond of hospitality and exchange gifts on the battlefield. It then follows Hector as he enters the city of Troy and meets the most important people in his life: his mother, Helen and Paris, and finally his wife and baby son. It is above all through the loving and fraught encounter between Hector and Andromache that Homer exposes the horror of war. This edition is suitable for undergraduates at all levels, and students in the upper forms of schools. The Introduction requires no knowledge of Greek and is intended for all readers interested in Homer"--

"The Iliad, the greatest of epic poems, still astonishes by its graphic brilliance, depth of humanity, and masterly construction. Martin West puts himself in the poet's shoes and reconstructs his aims and methods and the process by which he built up his mighty work and fixed it in writing. Drawing on two hundred years of Homeric scholarship and combining the best insights of Analysts and Unitarians, West shows how to distinguish the successive layers of composition that reflect the stages of the poet's workings, throwing light not only on the growth of the poem but also on the evolution of the poet's art and of his conception of the Trojan War. At the same time he points out the use of typical scenes and themes, material adapted from epic songs on other subjects, traditional techniques and motifs traceable back to Indo-European inheritance, and others taken over from the Near East. A persuasive picture is drawn of the poet in his historical context: brought up in north Ionia in the early decades of the seventh century, later travelling more widely, perhaps as far as Cyprus, finally finding patronage with the descendants of Aeneas in the Troad"--Publisher description, p.
