Abstract

During the first centuries of the Christian era, a large number of discrepant Latin translations of the Old and the New Testaments were in circulation. Rebekka S. Schirmer examines St. Augustine's comments about the problems raised by these texts, both descriptive and normative, and the extent to which Augustine's engagement with different versions of the Bible employed philological methods of biblical exegesis.

Abstract

This study of the Confessions engages with contemporary philosophers and psychologists antagonistic to religion and demonstrates the enduring value of Augustine's journey for those struggling with theistic incredulity and religious narcissism. Paul Rigby draws on current Augustinian scholarship and the works of Paul Ricœur to cross-examine Augustine's testimony. This analysis reveals the sophistication of Augustine's confessional text, which anticipates the analytical mindset of his critics. Augustine presents a coherent, defensible response to three age-old problems: free will and grace; goodness, innocent suffering, and radical evil; and freedom and predestination. The Theology of Augustine's Confessions moves beyond commentary and allows present-day readers to understand the Confessions as its original readers experienced it, bridging the divide introduced by Kant, Hegel, Freud, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and their descendants.

Abstract

Abstract

Augustine of Hippo was one of the first authors to give rise to the need for antholgies devoted to a single author. Today, over a hundred florilegia dedicated solely to Augustine's writings are known. Over the course of the Middle Ages, several of these collections proved instrumental in giving access to the Bishop of Hippo's large oeuvre, and in determining the direction of its reception. In fourteen chapters, this volume presents some important Augustinian florilegia, their sources, composition, context, afterlife, and the challenges inheerent in editing and studying them. Beginning in Late Antiquity, with Vincent of Lérins and Prosper of Aquitaine, the volume discusses several medieval and early modern florilegia, both well-known and more marginal, and concludes with their use by Augustine's modern editors. As such, this book contributes to a better understanding of the reception of Augustine throughout the Middle Ages and to the ways in which his exceptional auctoritas took shape

Abstract

This publication offers a historical, literary, and theological study of the treatise 'Aduersus Manichaeos', attributed to Evodius of Uzalis. Evodius was a friend and contemporary of Augustine of Hippo. His anti-Manichaean treatise 'Aduersus Manichaeos' constitutes an important source on both the Christian church as well as the Manichaean movement in the Latin world in the fifth century. Nevertheless, because the treatise bears witness to the influence of the anti-Manichaean writings of Augustine of Hippo, it has not yet been systematically studied on its own. As a result, much of its historical circumstances have been shrouded in mystery.0This volume is the result of the doctoral research of Aäron Vanspauwen (KU Leuven). The volume reconstructs the circumstances in which 'Aduersus Manichaeos' was written, and studies the treatise in relation to its fifth-century North African context. This publication complements the study of 'Aduersus Manichaeos' with a new critical edition of the original Latin text of the treatise, including a facing English translation.
