Abstract

Abstract

Those who have a passing knowledge of John Calvin's theology and reforms in Geneva in the sixteenth century may picture the confident and mature theologian and preacher without appreciating the various events, people, and circumstances that shaped the man. Before there was Protestantism's first and eminent systematic theologian, there was the French youth, the law student and humanist, the Protestant convert and homeless exile, the reluctant reformer and anguished city leader. Snapshots of the young Calvin create a collage that give a bigger picture to the grey-bearded Protestant reformer. Eleven scholars of early-modern history have joined in this volume to depict the people, movements, politics, education, sympathizers, nemeses, and controversies from which Calvin immerged in his young adulthood.

Abstract

Abstract

This book examines the where, when, and what of daily, weekly, and annual corporate worship in Geneva, revealing in rich detail the liturgical rhythm shaped by Calvin's theology. It includes sermons, sacraments, marriage, household devotions, ministry to the sick and dying. Shedding new light on Calvin's pulpit, it uncovers when, where, what he preached, and dates sermons. It clarifies the development of Psalm singing, the Sunday afternoon liturgy; it explains how the liturgical year was transformed and the special Calvinist day of prayer and sense of providential time developed. Extensive research in baptismal and marriage records shows how practice was reshaped because (like the Lord's Supper) these must be celebrated in a preaching service. Daily sermons in every pulpit required both educated ministers and significant planning. The program of ministerial rotation Calvin created adds dimensions to his doctrine of the church and demonstrates afresh his organizational skills--Publisher.

Abstract

The Calvin year 2009 began on October 31, 2008 with a conference organized by the Institute for Reformation Research (Apeldoorn) on the topic Calvin: Saint or Sinner? A number of scholars dealt with the question of whether and how Calvin brought a renewal to theology, the church and society. This volume contains the papers held at this conference, which demonstrate the detailed and growing research on the reformer of Geneva. Since the contributions reflect the latest research in Calvin studies, the conclusions reached in many of the papers are surprising. Calvin was not a reformer in all respects in the original sense, as some would have wanted him to be. However on other subjects he definitely distanced himself from tradition and from his fellow reformers. All in all, this volume gives an overview of the many facets of John Calvin and his theology.

Abstract

In the 16th Century the Bible was also studied collectively. Developing the Zurich model, the preachers of Geneva met weekly to study biblical books in lectio continua. In these congrégations every minister took his turn to present an exposition to his colleagues. In closed meetings the ministers held disputations on matters of doctrine and ethics and the voices of lesser known ministers are heard in surviving documents. In these collective studies, inspired exposition of Scripture was regarded as prophecy, fundamental to preaching of the Word. The first part of this book describes the structure and activities of this ecclesiastical institution on the basis of archival documents. The existence of a large body of manuscript texts on Joshua testifies to the esteem in which the congrégation's work was held. The second part analyses how the weekly Bible studies interacted with the implementation of Calvin's expository program. The third part traces the influence of Geneva until the 'prophesyings' in Puritanism, as other such forms of 'schools of the prophets' developed in France, England and the refugee churches.
