Abstract

Rhetoric and the Familiar examines the rhetorical practice of Francis Bacon and John Donne in both their writing and public speaking. It explores how their rhetorical planning negotiates the need both to use and combat familiar ideas, images, and emotions, when engaging different audiences. The book's main selling points are that it explores well-known texts from the neglected angle of faculty psychology. Its ability to illuminate familiar ground in an important but neglected way will be its main selling point in the academic market.

Abstract

This is a comparative reading of Donne's poetry and prose, which eschews questions of personal or religious sincerity in order to recreate an image of John Donne as a man of many performances.

Abstract

Through the reading records of Donne's poems and the concept of multiple referentiality, this study examines the social dimensions of early modern genres and the relationship among poetics, rhetoric and the Renaissance doctrines of imitation, placing systematic attention on how the differences oral and written modes of expression influences the process of reading and the early modern understanding of genre.

Abstract

Donne and the Politics of Conscience in Early Modern England examines the responses of John Donne and his contemporaries to post-Reformation debate about authority and interpretation. It argues that the legal and epistemological principles, as well as the narrative practices, of casuistry provided an important resource for those caught in the welter of conflicting laws and religions. The first two chapters explore the political, historical, and theological contexts of casuistry, locating Donne in debates about the limits of reason and the relativity of law and ethics. Chapter three addresses Donne's concern with problems of moral decision and action, of knowledge and definition, in five of his prose works. Chapter four examines ways in which his verse assimilates and wittily subverts casuists' responses to epistemological and linguistic uncertainty. The study is particularly useful for literary critics, intellectual historians, and theologians.
