L'ambition de cet ouvrage collectif est de poser les jalons d'une vaste enquête historique sur les documents dans la Rome antique. Ne sont pas envisagées ici la valeur subjective ni la valeur d'échange des documents considérés comme moyen de la recherche historique ; bien au contraire, il s'agit ici des documents tels qu'ils étaient conçus et utilisés par les Anciens eux-mêmes pour leur propre usage, clairement ressentis et acceptés comme tels par les acteurs de l'histoire que nous voulons comprendre. Ces documents, publics et privés, puisque dans l'Antiquité comme de nos jours les frontières entre les deux domaines étaient sinon entièrement floues, du moins penetrables, il faut en écrire l'histoire propre : suivre leur élaboration, leur publication, leur consultation, et enfin leur conservation. Ce premier volume, amorce d'une moisson future, rassemble huit études qui, toutes, traitent de séries documentaires rédigées dans l'Antiquité romaine. Produits d'un état plus bureaucratique qu'on ne le croit généralement, les archives romaines doivent d'abord être inventoriées dans leur état de spoliation, dans les traces négatives qu'elles ont laissées, avant d'être interrogées comme l'irremplaçable reflet d'un monde que nous avons perdu. The official records of England are the focus of this volume - their origin, their use, and what they reveal. The major theme of this volume is the records of the Anglo-Norman realm, and how they are used separately and in combination to construct the history of England and Normandy. The essays cover all types of written source material, including private charters and the official records of the chancery and Exchequer, chronicles, and personal sources such as letters, while some 100 previously unpublished documents are included in a series of appendices. There are studies here of particular Anglo-Normans, including a great aristocrat and a seneschal of Normandy; of records relating to Normandy surviving in England; of the Norman and English Exchequers, between them the financial mainstay of the king/dukes; of the controversial origins of the English Chancery records; and of Rosamund Clifford, the King's mistress.
