Abstract

This book offers a model for concepts and their dynamics. A basic assumptionis that concepts are composed of specified components, which are representedby large binary patterns whose psychological meaning is governed by the interaction between conceptual modules and other functional modules. A recurrent connectionist model is developed in which some inputs are attracted faster than others by an attractor, where convergence times can beinterpreted as decision latencies. The learning rule proposed is extracted from psychological experiments. The rule has the property that that whena context becomes more familiar, the associations between the concepts of the context spontaneously evolve from loose associations to a more taxonomicorganization.

Abstract

This volume comprises a selection of the key papers presented at the Eighth European Knowledge Acquisition Workshop (EKAW '94), held in Hoegaarden, Belgium in September 1994. The book demonstrates that work in the mainstream of knowledge acquisition leads to useful practical results and puts the knowledge acquisition enterprise in a broader theoretical and technological context. The 21 revised full papers are carefully selected key contributions; they address knowledge modelling frameworks, the identification of generic components, methodology aspects, and architectures and applications. The volume opens with a substantial preface by the volume editors surveying the contents.

Abstract

In recent years it has become apparent that an important part of the theory of artificial intelligence is concerned with reasoning on the basis of uncertain, incomplete, or inconsistent information. A variety of formalisms have been developed, including nonmonotonic logic, fuzzy sets, possibility theory, belief functions, and dynamic models of reasoning such as belief revision and Bayesian networks. Several European research projects have been formed in the area and the first European conference was held in 1991. This volume contains the papers accepted for presentation at ECSQARU-93, the European Conference on Symbolicand Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning and Uncertainty, held at the University of Granada, Spain, November 8-10, 1993.

Abstract

The Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence has been organizing Portuguese Conferences on Artificial Intelligence, now held every second year, since 1985. This volume contains selected papers from the Fifth Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The conference has an international status: 62 contributions from 13 countries were received, of which 26 were from Portugal. To guarantee a high scientific standard, all the contributions were reviewed by at least three researchers, and only 20 papers were accepted and included in these proceedings. The papers are organized into sections on constraints, search, knowledge representation, temporal reasoning, planning, diagnosis and repair, and learning.
