De fysische geneeskunde en revalidatie (FGR) is een deel van de geneeskunde dat zich richt op het stellen van de diagnose en het instellen van een mono- of multidisciplinaire aanpak van patiënten met musculoskeletale letsels, met de functionele, sociale en professionele revalidatie als invalshoek. Deze nadruk op het functioneren van de mens/patiënt in de breedst mogelijke zin, geeft de fysische geneeskunde en revalidatie een bijzondere plaats in de gezondheidszorg. Om deze taak te vervullen, maakt de FGR-specialist gebruik van specifieke functionele testen ter ondersteuning van een nauwkeurige functionele diagnose en wordt vaak gewerkt in multidisciplinair verband met kinesitherapeuten, ergotherapeuten en andere paramedische beroepen, onder eigen coördinatie. Dit handboek tracht een inleidend overzicht te verschaffen door enkele typerende FGR-topics te behandelen, zoals de conservatieve zorg voor wervelkolomaandoeningen, de medische aspecten van oefentherapie, de functionele aanpak van sportletsels en overbelastingsletsels en de basisbegrippen van neurologische en locomotorische revalidatie.
