"Lucidly written, and offering percipient analyses of a range of fascinating documentaries and short films, this original and insightful book examines the role of film as a key tool of regional policymakers and as a creative space in which the lived experience of a new region can take imaginative shape." -C. Claire Thomson, Professor of Cinema History, UCL "Chow's work on regioscapes shows how audiovisual media is closely interwoven with regional place-making. This fascinating book provides us with critical and pivotal insights into the screen mediations and counter-narratives of the ambitious political, economic and cultural construction that is the Øresund region." --Anne Marit Waade, Professor of Global Media Industries, Aarhus University, Denmark This book explores a range of lesser-known documentaries and short films from the transnational Øresund region released in the period 2000-2009, focusing on how this Scandinavian region's urban and maritime spaces, iconic architecture, and peripheral communities across Malmö and Copenhagen have been imagined and critiqued through film. This is the first book to widen the critical gaze beyond popular representations to examine a significant body of peripheral films produced in and about the metropolitan Øresund region. Emerging at a time of spatial transformation and geopolitical change, these films weave alternative narratives that confront the official rhetoric of transnational regionalism. Offering the concept of regioscape as a way to investigate the intimate relationship between artistic representation, screen policy, space, and the region-building project, this book presents new readings of films by contemporary Swedish and Danish filmmakers such as Fredrik Gertten, Kolbjörn Guwallius, Daniel Dencik, and Max Kestner. Pei-Sze Chow is Assistant Professor of Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Her interdisciplinary research takes a spatial, media-geographic approach to studying film cultures, focusing on the cinemas of peripheral regions and nations, diversity and representation, and transnationalism. She is the co-editor of A History of Danish Cinema (2021) and has published work on Nordic noir and geopolitics, architecture on film, and more recently on algorithms in film production.

The monograph follows the development of Alfredo Jaar's work, from his early public interventions to his latest installations, via his works on the gold miners in the Amazon and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The publication also features previously unpublished works created in Santiago at a time when the artist was experiencing the repression of Pinochet's military dictatorship on a daily basis, as well as works made by collating and rethinking press cuttings. Working with such different media as public interventions, installations, photography, and video, Alfredo Jaar examines the nature of images and the viewers' relationship to them. The crucial questions that he keeps exploring in his work tackle the very possibility of producing art based on events that we would prefer to ignore, and of creating images in a context characterized both by their over-abundance and, paradoxically, by their invisibility. For close to 30 years he built up a body of work of enormous strength and great sensitivity, closely linked to current events, but taking the opposite stance to sensationalist reports. Texts by art historians Georges Didi-Huberman, Griselda Pollock, and Nicole Schweizer, as well as philosopher Jacques Ranciere, shed new light on this complex and poetic body of works. Catalog for his 2007 exhibition called "Alfredo Jaar, The politics of images", at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne. Text by Nicole Schweizer, Georges Didi-Huberman, Jacques Ranciere, Griselda Pollock in English and French.

Atmosphere, Cinema, Architecture: Thematic Reflections on Ambiance and Place explores cinema and architecture as ambient and affective settings or circumstances that can enable the emergence of atmosphere. This book is an interdisciplinary reading of cinematographic practice which develops useful implications for spatial composition in art and architectural design. The way a film is set up, directed, composed, framed, and technically constructed can provide parallels, analogies and metaphors for the spatial organisation of cities, landscapes and buildings. Likewise, the way a built setting is conceived and devised can inform approaches to framing and spatial organisation in cinematography. The book begins on a personal note with a series of recollected atmospheric experiences, leading to an investigation of ambiguity and consilient discrepancy as circumstantial conditions necessary for the production of atmosphere. The mood of melancholia is explored to show the pivotal role that ambiguity, discrepancy and irresolution play in its distinctive ambiance. Atmosphereis then defined as an emergent condition arising between an ambient, affective circumstance and a mooded human being. The book then moves to analyse the inherent conditions in the setup of filmic and architectural settings that render them atmospheric. Reference is made to the cinema of Bresson, Resnais, Lynch, Tarr, Malik and Campion, and to Romanesque tympanae, the architectonic scenography of Franz Kafka’s novel The Castle and the work of Spanish architects Flores Prats. The concluding section, Anatomy of Atmosphere, is a lexicon of concepts, themes and tactics around atmosphere that might usefully inform creative practice.
