This book introduces the basic techniques and methods traditionally used in speaking about science to the public. The public often has a very different perception and understanding of science, and this must be taken into account when communicating with the public. This volume covers methods of scientific discourse, oral communication, preparation of the presentation, techniques and use of visual resources, and exercises for perfecting the technique of speaking in public about science. Speaking in Public About Science: A Quick Guide for the Preparation of Good Lectures, Seminars, and Scientific Presentations is a concise yet comprehensive resource that will be of value to beginners and senior scholars and researchers.

This book covers teaching ethnobiology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Providing an explanation of the historical and conceptual aspects of ethnobiology, the work addresses relatively new or little debated approaches which will interest even the most experienced researcher in the field of ethnobiology. The appropriation of nature, in various forms, may be perceived by mankind in certain ways. This work specifically addresses this initial stage of the relationship between humans and nature, along with the classic debate and the major theoretical contributions regarding how humanity classifies nature. This discussion is expanded upon, addressing the consequences of a utilitarian relationship with nature, the extractivism of forest products, and plant and animal domestication. The work then provides a synthesis of which variables affect local biological knowledge (LBK). The text includes a reference list in each chapter as well as a small glossary of ethnobiology terms and related areas, allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of the covered topics.

This volume in the series deals with the major Medicinal and Aromatic Plants MAPs of South America, providing information on major aspects of this specific group of plants on that continent (botany, traditional usage, chemistry, production/collection practices, trade and utilization). Brazil, in particular, offers an immense amount of biodiversity, including plants with great pharmacological interest and medicinal importance. The Amazon Basin, in northern Brazil has a highly diverse biota and still harbours a variety of unknown and unstudied plant species for medicinal values. Contributions are from internationally recognized professionals, specialists of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plant domain and have been invited mostly from the members of the International Society for Horticultural Science and International Council for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

There has been growing academic interest in food plants. This is a subject that lies at the frontiers of knowledge of various areas, such as environmental sciences, nutrition, public health, and humanities. To date, however, we do not have a book bringing these multi-disciplinary perspectives to bear on this complex field. This book presents the current state of knowledge on Brazilian food plants through a multidisciplinary approach, including an overview of food plants in Brazil, as well as comprehensive nutritional data. It compiles basic theories on the interrelationship between biodiversity and the security of food and nutrition, ethnobotanical knowledge of Brazilian food plants, as well as various methods of learning and teaching, including through social media, artificial intelligence, and through workshops.

This work adds an ecological and evolutionary perspective to the study of the relations between humans and natural resources. The first to cover this subject in English, this text studies the branch of ethnobiology that analyzes the evolutionary history of human behavioral patterns and human understanding about biological resources, considering the historical and contemporary aspects that influence these behaviors at both the individual and societal levels. Ethnobiology aggregates different theoretical, epistemological, and methodological perspectives. While some of these perspectives ignore the ecological and evolutionary nature of ethnobiology, the conventional ecological science insufficiently considers human aspects as topics of theoretical interest. Through exploring theories in ethnobiology, this work examines the interrelationships between people and nature, considering the forces that helped shape this inextricable link.

Designed for new scholars, this book features a quick and easy-to-read discussion of ethnobotany along with its major developments. The language is clear and concise, objective and straightforward, and structured to lead the reader from the beginning of this science to the most recent developments. While there are some books on ethnobotany, mainly dealing with methods, this book covers the topic in an introductory and comprehensive text that prepares the reader for more advanced study of ethnobotany.
