Bijna fluisterend, soms met lange stiltes, dan weer in een hevige woordenstroom, vertelt een jong zwart meisje over leven en vooral de dood. Over haar vader die wist dat hij zou sterven en hoe haar moeder hem niet kon redden. Over het laatste adieu van haar moeder die haar aanmaande om nu meteen snel te lopen, nog sneller, niet meer om te kijken, te blijven vluchten om te blijven leven.Het verhaal van Marie staat model voor het verhaal van meer dan een half miljoen Rwandezen die vanaf oktober 1996 in de meest mensonwaardige omstandigheden door het Congolese regenwoud getrokken zijn om te ontsnappen aan het regeringsleger van de huidige Rwandese president Paul Kagame. Hooguit één op vier heeft die tocht overleefd. Marie is één van hen.

Haat is menselijk en actueel. Hij maakt intrinsiek deel uit van wat zich tussen mensen kan afspelen. Dagelijks worden we geconfronteerd met de vele vormen en uitwassen van haat: pestgedrag, cyberhaat, manifestaties door haatgroepen, religieus geïnspireerd geweld tegen andersdenkenden, genocides.Haat is machtig als vernietigende kracht: hij weet individuen en grote groepen mensen te motiveren om het slechtste uit zichzelf naar boven te halen. Haat staat tegelijk onmachtig tegenover de positieve vrijheid van mensen om haat te overstijgen.Na een onderzoek naar het wezen van haat richt dit boek een breedhoeklens op de vele gezichten ervan, zowel bij individuen en groepen als bij volkeren. *Habeas Viscus* focuses attention on the centrality of race to notions of the human. Alexander G. Weheliye develops a theory of "racializing assemblages," taking race as a set of sociopolitical processes that discipline humanity into full humans, not-quite-humans, and nonhumans. This disciplining, while not biological per se, frequently depends on anchoring political hierarchies in human flesh. The work of the black feminist scholars Hortense Spillers and Sylvia Wynter is vital to Weheliye's argument. Particularly significant are their contributions to the intellectual project of black studies vis-a-vis racialization and the category of the human in western modernity. Wynter and Spillers configure black studies as an endeavor to disrupt the governing conception of humanity as synonymous with white, western man. Weheliye posits black feminist theories of modern humanity as useful correctives to the bare life and biopolitics discourse exemplified by the works of Giorgio Agamben and Michel Foucault, which, Weheliye contends, vastly underestimate the conceptual and political significance of race in constructions of the human. *Habeas Viscus* reveals the pressing need to make the insights of black studies and black feminism foundational to the study of modern humanity.
