Abstract

This book critically examines the impact of the Inter-American Human Rights System (IAHRS). Going beyond traditional state compliance models of human rights impact, it develops a contextual understanding of how the IAHRS shapes political struggles between actors and institutions seeking to advance the realization of human rights and those who resist such social and political change. Par Engstrom is Senior Lecturer in Human Rights at the Institute of the Americas, University College, UK, and the academic coordinator of the International Network on the Inter-American Human Rights System.

Abstract

Medial Afterlives of H.P. Lovecraft brings together essays on the theory and practice of adapting H.P. Lovecraft's fiction and the Lovecraftian. It draws on recent adaptation theory as well as broader discourses around media affordances to give an overview over the presence of Lovecraft in contemporary media as well as the importance of contemporary media in shaping what we take Lovecraft's legacy to be. Discussing a wide array of medial forms, from film and TV to comics, podcasts, and video and board games, and bringing together an international group of scholars, the volume analyzes individual instances of adaptation as well as the larger concern of what it is possible to learn about adaptation from the example of H.P. Lovecraft, and how we construct Lovecraft and the Lovecraftian today in adaptation. Medial Afterlives of H.P. Lovecraft is focused on an academic audience, but it will nonetheless hold interest for all readers interested in Lovecraft today. Tim Lanzendörfer is research assistant professor of American Studies at Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany. He has published widely in contemporary literature and media. Abstract

This book reveals how Spielberg utilises stylistic strategies that are both unique and innovative when considered within the context of the classical Hollywood system. James Mairata identifies two distinct systems at work in Spielberg's application of style. One is the use of deep space compositions and staging, a form that was commonly seen in Hollywood cinema until the rise of the 'New Hollywood' in the early 1970s. The other system is based on the ubiquitous shot, reverse shot arrangement most commonly used for dialogue scenes, and which Spielberg has modified into what the author describes as wide reverses. Through the integration of both systems, Spielberg is able to create a more complete visual sense of scenographic space and a more comprehensive world of the narrative, while still remaining within the conventional boundaries of classical style. The wide reverse system also permits him to present a more highly developed version of Hollywood's conventional practice of rendering style as transparent or unnoticed. This volume shows that this, together with the wide reverse further enables Spielberg to create a narrative that offers the spectator both a more immersive and more affective experience. .

Abstract

This book provides the first English translation of Argirópolis (1850) by the Argentine Domingo F. Sarmiento, one of the most important political and cultural figures of nineteenth-century Latin America. Argirópolis proposes the union of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay into the United States of South America or the United States of the Río de la Plata, with a capital on Martín García island. It anticipates some aspects of the continent’s future, such as the formation of Mercosur (the Southern Common Market) in 1991. Argirópolis explores politics, modernity, and nation formation, making Sarmiento’s treatise one of Argentina and Latin America’s most relevant programmatic texts. Presented alongside a critical introduction that situates the essay in its historical and political contexts, this translation allows English-speaking readers to explore nineteenth-century Latin American perspectives on concepts such as the nation-state, sovereignty, progress, space, and modernity.

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the rich and diverse tradition of social thought in Chile over the last century. The authors emphasize the close relationship between sociology and society, and address large issues such as the institutionalization of sociology in the face of an open modernization process following WWII, the key role played by Chile in the regionalization and internationalization of sociology and social sciences in Latin America from the late 1950s until the 1973 Coup d'état, and the radicalization of sociology and the boom of dependency theories during that time. The analysis extends to independent academic centers that kept sociological thought, social intervention and the democratic dream alive within an authoritarian context, and the role of academic and professional sociology since the return to democracy, which has been attentive to accompanying and interpreting the development of a changing Chilean society. Framed within the country's cultural, economic, historical, social and political experience, this overview of the debates, dissemination, networks, and educational programs associated with sociology will be of interest to students and scholars of Latin American studies and historical sociology. Juan Jesús Morales Martín is Professor and Researcher in the Sociology School at the Universidad Católica Silva Henríquez, Chile. In 2018, he edited the book Filantropía, ciencia y universidad: nuevos aportes y análisis sociohistóricos sobre la diplomacia académica en América Latina [Philanthropy, Science, and University: New Approaches and Socio-Historical Analysis on Academic Diplomacy in Latin America]. Justino Gómez de Benito is Professor in the Universidad Católica Silva Henríquez, Chile, and he was head of the Sociology School between 1999 and 2013. Abstract

This edited volume offers a wide-ranging picture of Argentine women filmmakers' contribution to the film industry from the 1980s to the present by bringing together the work of highly acclaimed and emerging directors. Through thirteen critical essays by leading scholars in the field of Argentine cinema, the book acknowledges that contemporary women filmmakers have transformed the cinema of Argentina by questioning, challenging and debunking hegemonic patriarchal systems of representation. With a focus on women's voices and experiences, the contributions redress both the under-representation of women and girls onscreen and the perpetuation of stereotypes, while exploring the innovative aesthetics used by these filmmakers. "This is the first book in English dedicated to the rich output of recent Argentine women filmmakers and features work by leading experts. A comprehensive, and well researched book that tells multiple stories of women's filmmaking in Argentina." - Deborah Shaw, Professor of Film and Screen Studies, University of Portsmouth, UK Dr Mirna Vohnsen is Assistant Lecturer in Spanish at Technological University Dublin. She specialises in contemporary Argentine cinema and culture. She is the author of Portrayals of Jews in Contemporary Argentine Cinema: Rethinking Argentinidad (2019) and the co-author of Eva Perón: A Reference Guide to Her Life and Works (2021). Abstract

This book focuses on the analysis of sensorial representations of violent images in contemporary films that portray embodied violation in urban environments of street clashes and prisons in Northern Ireland and Brazil during the late twentieth century. There is an emphasis on the representation of senses and how they play a significant role in structuring narratives and mapping the cinematic landscapes of conflict. Whether on the streets and prisons of Belfast, Derry, São Paulo or Rio, the attention is on the endangered body and its fragility or strength. Analyzing films through the novel framework of sensorial perspective enables the understanding of urban and prison landscapes as part of a somatic geography that affects the corporeal engagement of the participants. As a multicultural study, this is an essential book for those interested in the relationship between cinema and history while taking into consideration the interactive roles of the senses and perception.
