Kralen spreken tot de verbeelding. Ze zijn aantrekkelijk en persoonlijk vanwege hun kleuren, materialen, patronen en associaties. Je draagt ze op je lichaam, waar je ze voelt en anderen ze zien. Kralen zijn waardevol en verplaatsbaar, tegelijkertijd reizigers en souvenirs.

Kralen zijn de universeelste sieraden van de mensheid. Ze komen voor op alle continenten en door de hele geschiedenis heen. Kralen hebben basaal drie functies: ter decoratie, bescherming en herinnering. In dit boekje staan in Nederland opgegraven kralen centraal, van de prehistorie tot de 17de eeuw. Zestig bijzondere kralensnoeren uit het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden zijn omgeven door essays over gebruik en betekenis van kralen in verleden en heden. De teruggevonden kralen geven in combinatie met afbeeldingen en teksten een beeld van wie wat droeg, wanneer en waarom.

Ze zijn een lust voor het oog: oker en git uit hunebedden, snoeren vol barnsteen uit de Ijzertijd, Romeinse meloenkralen, Merovingische grafgiften, middeleeuwse gebedskralen en tot slot de grootschalige kralenproductie in Amsterdam die opkomt rond 1600. Hoogtij van de kralenmode waren de Vroege Middeleeuwen, met honderden kleurrijke snoeren vol glazen kralen. Deze zijn gevonden in heel Nederland, maar deels gemaakt in het Midden-Oosten, het Middellandse Zeegebied en Scandinavië. Kralen van wereldklasse.
