Elsewhere, Within Here is an engaging look at travel across national borders--as a foreigner, a tourist, an immigrant, a refugee—in a pre- and post-9/11 world. Who is welcome where? What does it mean to feel out of place in the country you call home? When does the stranger appear in these times of dark metamorphoses? These are some of the issues addressed by the author as she examines the cultural meaning and complexities of travel, immigration, home and exile. The boundary, seen both as a material and immaterial event, is where endings pass into beginnings. Building upon themes present in her earlier work on hybridity and displacement in the median passage, and illuminating the ways in which "every voyage can be said to involve a re-siting of boundaries," Trinh T. Minh-ha leads her readers through an investigation of what it means to be an insider and an outsider in this "epoch of global fear."

Africa is generally regarded by scholars and the mass media as a "continent on the move" - a movement primarily in the direction of Europe. Yet the public debate is dominated by two misconceptions. The first of these is that high population growth in Africa would almost automatically trigger higher international migration to the neighbouring European continent. There is even talk of a "rush to Europe". The second frequently encountered misconception is that migration and flight in and from Africa is primarily a result of poverty, violent conflicts and environmental degradation. Both are misconceptions that cannot be reconciled with the facts at hand. These facts are the subject of this volume. The authors Prof. Thomas Faist PhD heads the research group Sociology of Transnationalization and the Center on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD) at Bielefeld University. Tobias Gehring is doing his doctorate at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University and the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS). Dr. Susanne U. Schultz received her doctorate from the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University. She is a senior expert at the Bertelsmann Stiftung and an Associated Research Fellow at the Center on Migration, Citizenship and Development (COMCAD).

This book explores the dynamics of the socio-cultural baggage that Indian indentured migrants took with them to the Caribbean island of Trinidad and how they have since become a vibrant diaspora community, namely the Indo-Trinidadians. It combines social history with first-hand fieldwork data to portray human ingenuity in terms of social reconstitution and community building in a hostile socio-cultural environment. Furthermore, it addresses key social institutions—religion, caste, and family—and cultural elements—language, foodways, and ethnicity. Its analytical framework is guided by the concept of metamorphosis; it steers clear of the persistence versus change hypotheses. Given its focus, it will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, social anthropology, history, and migration and diaspora studies.
