"Broadly viewing the global economy as a political competition that produces winners and losers, International Political Economy holistically and accessibly introduces the field of IPE to students with limited background in political theory, history, and economics. This text surveys major interests and institutions and examines how state and non-state actors pursue wealth and power. Emphasizing fundamental economic concepts as well as the interplay between domestic and international politics, International Political Economy not only explains how the global economy works, it also encourages students to think critically about how economic policy is made in the context of globalization"--

This collection examines the extent to which foreign capital from conventional (OECD countries) and non-conventional (BRICS) sources has impacted economic development in Africa over the last two decades. It provides in-depth analyses of the nature, motives, and implications of this capital, and identifies drivers of contemporary rapid growth within and across African countries. Authored by leading experts, the book offers original insights for academics, policymakers, and practitioners studying the changes taking place in Africa as the continent strides more confidently toward integration with the global economy.

This book brings together a diverse range of responses to China's Marine Silk Road Initiative, which proposes to redraw the map of Asia, particularly South Asia. China’s 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI) is a massive scheme to connect wide swaths of East, Southeast, South, and West Asia through a dense web of interconnected hard and soft infrastructure involving ports, roads, logistics facilities, special industrial zones, and free trade and investment agreements. This book consists of eight chapters specially commissioned for this project and selected from a number of papers presented at “The Political Economy of China’s Maritime Silk Road Initiative and South Asia” conference that was held in Shanghai in November 2015. This book will be invaluable for students of Chinese foreign security and foreign economic policy, those interested in South Asia including Indian foreign security and economic policy as well as Indian relations with China, those attentive to international economic developments in East and South Asia, and those interested in the political and economic situation in specific MSRI participant countries such as Pakistan, Maldives, and Sri Lanka as well as their political and economic relations with China. .

Published 35 years after Palgrave Macmillan’s landmark International Political Economy (IPE) series was first founded, this Handbook captures the state of the art of contemporary IPE. It draws on the series’ history of focussing on the oft-neglected study of the global South. Providing interdisciplinary perspectives from scholars hailing from the global North and South, the Handbook illustrates the theoretical innovations and empirical richness necessary to explain today’s ever-changing world. This is a world in which the global South and North are not only being transformed by the end of bipolarity and the rise of the BRICS, but also by diverse global crises and growing cross-border challenges. It is a world where human development, governance and security are becoming ever more elusive, where, profoundly altered by the rise of new technologies, the structure of relations between nations itself is changing, becoming increasingly interconnected, both digitally and physically. Understanding these issues is of critical importance to better comprehend and anticipate current and future global transformations. This Handbook is the ideal primer for all scholars, practitioners and policy makers looking to do so. Timothy M. Shaw is Visiting Professor in Global Governance and Human Security at the University of Massachusetts Boston, USA as well as Adjunct Professor at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, Canada. Laura C. Mahrenbach is Postdoctoral Fellow at the Bavarian School of Public Policy at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. Renu Modi is Associate Professor and former Director of the Centre for African Studies at the University of Mumbai, India. Xu Yi-Chong is Professor in the School of Government and International Relations at Griffith University, Australia.
