Abstract

This book aims to provide an overview of crucial aspects related to the interconnection between the political economy of energy security and national security, which is of great importance globally due to high volatility and complexity. In this book, contemporary energy issues in relation to the energy security are examined, along with main vulnerabilities and challenges that have appeared lately with an impact beyond country borders and with a particular focus on the Eastern Mediterranean region. Energy security is studied on both International and European level and finally the Eastern Mediterranean region with special reference to the countries of the State of Israel and the Republic of Cyprus. The rapidly changing geopolitical environment makes energy security one of the critical areas of immediate interest that need a holistic approach. The importance of energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean region is constantly growing and requires the proper vision to enhance security in the region. Energy is now linked to the issues of sustainable development and tackling climate change, which is also taken into account. Finally, this book is expected to contribute to the existing literature and provide an in-depth study that gives a fresh approach to the academic and political community. Floros Flouros is an Assistant Professor in International Political Economy: Energy, Environment and Climate Change at the University of Neapolis Pafos, Cyprus.

Abstract

Marco Nilsson explores the detailed dynamic of Scandinavian jihadism in a unique way. This is “the book to read” if one wants to understand the phenomenon. ---Stig Jarle Hansen, professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences Marco Nilsson has unparalleled access to current and former jihadists in Scandinavia. This book provides a critical contribution to our understanding of what motivates those involved in jihadist violence, their recruitment processes, and how they are affected by their involvement. ---James Khalil, preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE) specialist affiliated with RUSI This book is based on unprecedented interviews with active and former jihadists, even IS fighters. It focuses on the changing nature of jihad as a social phenomenon and how jihad changes jihadists. It argues that there are fascinating generational differences between jihadists’ ideas and behaviors. Moreover, it argues that jihad changes jihadists through socialization in jihadists groups. Indeed, radicalization continues in new forms after entering the conflict zone. Recognizing that jihadism is a complex social phenomenon and a discourse on religiously legitimized violence with deep roots in the history of Islam and Muslim societies, the book asks two simple questions. Why have some Muslims residing in the West taken up arms to enter the global battlefields of jihad? Have the motivations and experiences of different jihadists all been the same? To create a more coherent analysis than the article format allows, and to offer new insights, the author summarizes and further develops several years of research into jihadism. As gaining access to and conducting interviews—especially with active jihadists—often differs from standard interviews, much of the data were collected in a gray zone between more formal interviewing and ethnographic research. The empirical material, which is based on interviews with active and former jihadists, is unique. Moreover, the methodological reflections are unprecedented, and the project offers new analytical insights into jihadism with a focus on how jihadism and jihadists change. Marco Nilsson is Associate Professor at Jönköping University, Sweden.

Abstract

This book explores the political economy of governance in Palestine. It makes a unique contribution to studies of governance and political economy using the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a case study, introducing and developing the concept of 'dual rentierism'. The author uses primary research to chart the evolution of the fiscal sociology of the PA and explore how it has shaped the PA's economic policies and the state-society relationship in the Palestinian Territories. The book adopts a critical political economy approach, making the case that external sources of PA income represent political rents that need to be disaggregated and studied concurrently. It further focuses on the drivers and constraints that have shaped the PA's policy development and state-building associated with its dependence on external revenues. Ultimately, the book elaborates on how the need for fiscal survivability has thwarted the Palestinian quest for statehood. Anas Iqtait is a Lecturer in Economics and Political Economy of the Middle East at the Australian National University Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, along with being a Non-Resident Scholar at the Middle East Institute Program on Palestine and Palestinian-Israeli Affairs. .

Abstract

This book examines the driving forces behind national-level politics, changes to the judiciary, social control, economic reform, environmental protection, urban development, the management of ethnic relations, as well as foreign and security policy orientation in China under Xi Jinping. It explains Xi's ambition, examines the limitations he has to confront, and maps the direction of reform he pursues. The book starts off by examining how the consultative Leninist nature of the political system continues to shape politics and policy in China under Xi, and what the China dream Xi advocates actually entails domestically and beyond China. It ends by highlighting the megatrends that will prevail in the decade when Xi is expected to stay in power. The book also includes contributions from five Central Party School professors whose views are taken seriously by the Chinese leadership.

Abstract

"This book offers an important and distinctive perspective on recent political developments that distinguishes it from studies of the populist turn by asking about the influence on developments in governance." -Will Jennings, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, University of Southampton, UK "Hits the nail on the head with a degree of precision and deftness of touch that is both refreshing and shocking to read." -Danny Dorling, Halford Mackinder Professor of Geography, University of Oxford, UK "In this readable, insightful and illuminating account, Roger Brown charts the roots and legacy of the four-decade-long experiment in neoliberalism, and exposes the reality behind the promises of a stronger economy and a more resilient society by the free market evangelists." -Stewart Lansley, Visiting Fellow at the School of Policy Studies, University of Bristol, UK This book assesses the impacts of the right within the US and UK, forty years on from their initial effects upon economic and social orthodoxies. It argues that one way of understanding the main developments in the political economies of the major Anglophone countries during these decades is to see them as a conservative reaction to the New Deal and the Welfare State, and the associated growth in state intervention, expenditure and regulation. The recent rise in 'authoritarian populism' can be seen as a popular response to the policies associated with this reaction, the response being exploited by populist demagogues like Donald Trump, Boris Johnson and Marine Le Pen. Written in a lively and engaging manner, this book will be of interest to academics and students in politics, economics, sociology and contemporary history, as well as general readers. Roger Brown is Professor Emeritus and former Vice Chancellor of Solent University, UK. He has written five books and many articles, mostly on various aspects of higher education policy.

Abstract

This book clarifies Khomeini’s views on nationalism, sectarianism, and peace and war by putting the Iran-Iraq war at center of understanding of Khomeini’s ideology. Moreover, by making comparisons between Khomeini’s thoughts before and after the revolution with his words during the Iran-Iraq war, this book helps us see how his discourse during the conflict was shaped by such thoughts. Also, such a comparison helps us understand the complexities of Khomeini’s doctrines and their evolvements. Additionally, by offering a unique set of methodological tools, this book introduces a new way to study political leaders in Iran and other parts of the Middle East. Meysam Tyaebipour is a researcher and human right activist. Meysam’s area of interests are the Middle East politics and political ideology.
