Dit boek laat zien hoe eenzaamheid ontstaat, wat het doet met jeugdigen en wat er aan te doen is. Het is een helder geschreven boek dat beoogt (aankomende) orthopedagogen, psychologen, psychiaters, sociaal-pedagogische hulpverleners, leerkrachten en beleidsmakers er van te doordringen dat eenzaamheid bij jeugdigen veel schade aanricht en daarom meer aandacht verdient. 
Eenzaamheid onder jeugdigen wordt vaak niet opgemerkt als probleem. De aandacht gaat ten onrechte alleen uit naar ouderen. Maar ook jeugdigen kunnen eenzaam zijn en daar onder lijden. Eenzaamheid is een sluipend gevaar. Het vormt voor de ontwikkeling een ernstige bedreiging.

Eenzame jeugdigen verkeren in een kwetsbare positie met veel schadelijke gevolgen. Bij aanhoudende eenzaamheid raken zij steeds meer geïsoleerd en treden serieuze sociale, psychische en fysieke problemen op.
