Maria Sibylla Merian werd in Frankfurt am Main geboren als dochter van de destijds beroemde graveur en uitgever Mattthäus Merian en een Nederlandse moeder. Haar eerste kunstonderricht ontving ze van haar stiefvader, de stillevenschilder Jacob Marrel, en diens leerling Abraham Mignon. Als kind al raakte ze in de ban van insecten en bloemen, die ze later zo fraai en nauwgezet zou verbeelden. Als een der eersten bestudeerde zij systematisch de ontwikkelingsstadia van vlinders, die zij in tekeningen en aquarellen vastlegde om deze vervolgens te laten drukken. Met haar onderzoek legde zij, een halve eeuw vóór Linnaeus, de basis voor de entomologie. Ook behoorde zij tot de beste 'botanische' kunstenaars van de late zeventiende eeuw. Dit is de eerste monografie over Merian die recht doet aan haar veelzijdig oeuvre. Het boek verschijnt ter gelegenheid van een tentoonstelling over leven en werk van deze kunstenares en natuuronderzoekster, die in het voorjaar van 1998 gehouden werd in Teylers Museum te Haarlem.

"Bildende Künstler müssen wohnen wie Könige und Götter. Wie wollten sie denn sonst für Könige und Götter bauen und verzieren?" (Goethe, Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre II, 8). Was im übertragenen Sinn auf Goethe selbst zutraf, soll hinsichtlich des bildenden Künstlers in Europa bis um 1800 aus wechselnder Perspektive hinterfragt werden: Ausnahmekünstler ? wie Goethe, aber auch Mantegna, Dürer, Michelangelo, Rubens, Rembrandt oder die Gebrüder Asam - wohnten mitunter geradezu fürstlich, aber trifft das allgemein auf den europäischen Künstler der Vormoderne zu? Der Band nimmt das Künstlerhaus in den Blick und fragt zunächst aus sozialtopographischer Sicht nach seiner Lage. Welche Faktoren beeinflussten diese mit? In Frage kommen beispielsweise die der Nachbarschaft, der räumlichen Nähe zu möglichen Auftraggebern oder zu repräsentativen Verkaufsorten wie zentralen Plätzen, prominenten Straßenzügen und bedeutenden Kirchenbauten. Kunst- und kul turhistorisch wird der Architektur und Ausstattung, der Ikonographie und Ikonologie eines Bildprogramms von Künstlerhäusern nachgegangen. 'Visual artists should dwell like kings and gods: how else are they to build and decorate for kings and gods?' (Goethe, Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years II, 8). - What applies to Goethe himself in a figurative sense, shall be discussed here in respect to the visual artist in Early Modern Europe up to 1800: Exceptional artists - such as Goethe - but also Mantegna, Dürer, Michelangelo, Rubens, Rembrandt or the Asam Brothers, have, now and then, lived in stately homes and almost princely dwellings. But does this observation apply to the European artist of the pre-modern era in general? This volume takes a fresh look at the artist's home from varying perspectives. From the perspective of social topography, the first question to be raised is: What factors were the most influential in respect to the choice of the location: The residential era, or neighborhood, the proximity to possible clients, or to prestigious places for sales such as centrally located squares, prominent streets, or significant churches? From the perspective of art history and cultural studies, the architecture and its furnishings, the iconography and iconology of sculptural and pictorial programs of artists' houses will be discussed."
