Abstract

The Paris Salons of the mid-nineteenth century are famous today above all for the paintings that were rejected more than for those that were actually shown. The rejected works form today's canon of art history and are regarded as heralds of a modern age. This book looks to reassess the other side of the art history of the nineteenth century. Salon Painting has often been dismissed as overly academic or staid. Now art historian Norbert Wolf turns back the pages of history as he reintroduces readers to the artistry and excellence of the Salon Painting in Europe, Britain, Russia and the US. In an opulent new book, illustrated throughout with gorgeous reproductions, Wolf looks at Salon painting from a variety of perspectives, such as the rise of the bourgeoisie and Paris's position as Europe's cultural capitol. Wolf examines masterpieces by Cabanel, Manet, Bierstadt, The Pre-Raphaelites, and Sargent, demonstrating how classical subjects gave way to modern concerns.

Abstract

Pliny's Natural History (AD 77-79) served as an indispensable guide to and exemplar of the ideals of art for Renaissance artists, patrons, and theorists. Bearing the imprimatur of antiquity, the Natural History gave permission to do art on a grand scale, to value it, and to see it as an incomparable source of prestige and pleasure. In Pliny and the Artistic Culture of the Italian Renaissance, Sarah Blake McHam surveys Pliny's influence, from Petrarch, the first figure to recognize Pliny's relevance to understanding the history of Greek art and its reception by the Romans, to Vasari and late 16th-century theorists. McHam charts the historiography of Latin and Italian manuscripts and early printed copies of the Natural History to trace the dissemination of its contents to artists from Donatello and Ghiberti to Michelangelo and Titian. Meanwhile, benefactors commissioned works intended to emulate the prototypes Pliny described, aligning themselves with the great patrons of antiquity. This is a richly illustrated, comprehensive reference work of social history, myth making, iconography, theory, and criticism.

Abstract

The Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes is an interdisciplinary forum, uniting scholars specializing in cultural history including the history of art, and intellectual history including the history of ideas. It publishes articles based on new research, normally from primary sources. The subject matter encompasses intellectual themes and traditions, the arts in their various forms, religion, philosophy, science, literature and magic, as well as political and social life, from antiquity to the dawn of the contemporary era. Just as the work of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes is known for crossing cultural borders, the JWCI provides a home for research into the many connections between European cultures and the wider world—especially the Near East, Asia and the Americas.

Abstract

An anthology of essays exploring the relationship between film and art, within and across the domains of theory and practice, from the late nineteenth century to the present. An anthology of essays exploring the relationship between film and art, within and across the domains of theory and practice, from the late nineteenth century to the present. In the footsteps of Andre Bazin, this anthology of 15 original essays argues that the photographic origin of twentieth-century cinema is anti-anthropocentric. Well aware that the twentieth century stands out as the only period in history with its own photographic film record for posterity, Angela Dalle Vacche has convened international scholars at The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, and asked them to rethink the history and theory of the cinema as a new model for the museum of the future. By exploring the art historical tropes of face and landscape, and key areas of film studies such as early cinema, Soviet film theory, documentary, the avant-garde and the newly-born genre of the museum film, this collection includes detailed discussions of installation art, and close analyses of media relations which range from dance to painting to performance art. Thanks to the title of Andre Malraux's famous project, Film, Art, New Media: Museum Without Walls? invites readers to reflect on the museum of the future, where twentieth-century cinema will play a pivotal role by interrogating the relation between art and science, technology and nature, from the side of photography in dialogue with digitalization Review: 'A provocative interrogation of the multidimensional relations among the visual arts. Consistently lucid, informed and original, these essays reveal unexpected and hitherto unexplored aspects of modernity and visual culture that suggest fresh and creative ways of rethinking these phenomena. An outstanding collection.' - Ronald Bogue, University of Georgia, USA "An anthology of essays exploring the relationship between film and art, within and across the domains of theory and practice, from the late nineteenth century to the present."--Publisher's website.

Abstract

"A wide-ranging introduction to the way that art was made, valued, and viewed in northern Europe in the age of the Renaissance, from the late fourteenth to the early years of the sixteenth century. Drawing on a rich range of sources, from inventories and guild regulations to poetry and chronicles, Northern Renaissance Art examines everything from panel paintings and prints to metalwork and manuscripts. While many little-known works are highlighted, the book also presents new ways of viewing and understanding the more familiar, such as the paintings of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, and Hans Memling, or the sculpture of Claus Sluter and Veit Stoss, by considering the physical and technical evidence of these works as objects, alongside the social and economic contexts of their creation and reception. Throughout, Susie Nash challenges the perception that Italy was the European leader in artistic innovation at this time, demonstrating forcefully that northern art, and particularly that of the Southern Netherlands, dominated visual culture throughout Europe in this crucial period."--Page 4 of cover.
