À l'aide de Manufactories of Caring Space-Time, le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand (MSK), le 49 Nord 6 Est-FRAC Lorraine de Metz (France) et la Fundació Antoni Tapies de Barcelone (Espagne) créent une plateforme de réflexion sur les nouvelles tendances relationnelles, collectives et collaboratives dans l'art. Ce projet coopératif est co-financé par la Commission Européenne dans le cadre du programme Europe Créative. Le projet se termine avec une exposition collaborative au MSK.

Anything is possible in installation art. The typically short lifespan of the materials and techniques used and the intended experience can be endless, often to the despair of the custodian of the work. The processes involved in preserving this complex form of art, reinstalling it, finding ways to recreate the experience over and again, as well as the decisionmaking that underlies these processes, form the backbone of this book. What did the artist originally intend and how has that concept been realised in the past? How can one preserve and document the installation? What relation exists between the components and the space, and what is the spectator’s part in the work? Questions of this kind are examined in connection with a number of case studies. At the same time, it reports on the results of an extensive research project Inside Installations (2004-2007) carried out by an international group of custodians active in the conservation of contemporary art.

When these essays first appeared in *Artforum* in 1976, their impact was immediate. They were discussed, annotated, cited, collected, and translated - the three issues of *Artforum* in which they appeared have become nearly impossible to obtain. Having Brian O'Doherty's provocative essays available again is a signal event for the art world. O'Doherty was the first to explicitly confront a particular crisis in postwar art as he sought to examine the assumptions on which the modern commercial and museum gallery was based. Concerned with the complex and sophisticated relationship between economics, social context, and aesthetics as represented in the contested space of the art gallery, he raises the question of how artists must construe their work in relation to the gallery space and system.
