Abstract

The Bernese painter, draftsman, poet and statesman Niklaus Manuel (c. 1484-1530) is one of the outstanding personalities of the beginning of modern times in Switzerland. His artistic work has long attracted interest in international research. The Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA) now presents the catalogue raisonné, a systematic review of Manuel's work. The present catalog raisonné, which publishes the results of a long-term research project by SIK-ISEA in joint editorship with the Burgerbibliothek Bern, brings the knowledge about Niklaus Manuel up to date. It is not only possible to discover Manuel's artistic creativity through originality and extraordinary Drawing quality captivates to meet new, but to give the artist his appropriate place in the art history of the early modern period. The Catalog raisonné contains two essays by Michael Egli and Hans Christoph von Tavel, which classify Manuel's oeuvre in the light of the preceding intensive investigations and embed it in the historical context of the early modern period. The catalog section includes the description and the information about around 300 drawings, cracks, woodcuts, plates, handkerchiefs and murals. In the commentary on the current research results are presented, such as the creation of a work, to art-technological studies, to clients and buyers, to work contexts and the reception, and it will be offered corresponding new interpretations. In addition, the provenance, the literature and the exhibition catalog are listed for each work.In addition to the newly compiled biography of the artist's own contribution provides information on the art-technological investigation on the so-called Dominican altar. Approximately 660 colorful, high-quality reproductions accompany the publication and take current scientific requirements into account
