The University of Cambridge has always inspired artists and writers, and these sumptuous volumes from 1840 portray some of its most important historic buildings, institutions and people. Each volume includes a collection of essays, anecdotes, poems and reminiscences on the colleges, museums, gardens, streets and character of the town, as well as historical essays on the Boat Race and university teaching. The many illustrations of major sights and important views, such as the Backs, the river Cam and Grantchester meadows, include works by or after several well-known artists, engraver Charles George Lewis and landscape painter John Murray Ince among them. In this major contribution to the intellectual history of Cambridge University, Dr Garland takes as her main theme the rise of a specific educational ideal in early Victorian Cambridge, how it enjoyed a moment of triumph, and then how it fell under the impact of a new set of challenges. The story revolves around the careers of a group of 'conservative reformers', led by the Trinity dons Whewell and Sedgwick. They were the self-designated providers of a refurbished version of traditional Cambridge values in the new environment of a rapidly industrializing England, and took as their ideal a general unified core of knowledge based upon mathematics, classics and moral philosophy. They wished to retain this general structure because they believed it corresponded to the structure of the human mind and its mental faculties. For them, belief in the harmony of science and religion was part and parcel of their basically Broad Church religious views.

The historian & writer Thomas Fuller published his 11-volume Church-History of Britain in 1655, together with an appendix volume, the History of the University of Cambridge Since the Conquest. A stand-alone edition of this appendix was prepared with corrections & clarifications by Marmaduke Prickett, chaplain of Trinity College & Thomas Wright, the prolific author of books on the middle ages, & appeared in 1840. This historic account is now republished, offering detailed & lively insights into the university's origins, roots & traditions. It also provides an informed commentary, sometimes biting, sometimes fantastic, on the university's complex relationship with the church, Oxford & the town authorities of Cambridge. This anonymous and light-hearted work was first published in 1803: reissued here is the edition of 1824, of which the authors describe themselves as 'a Brace of Cantabs'. It claims both to be a guide to 'the academical customs' of the University of Cambridge and to its 'colloquial or cant terms' with notes on those that differ from the usage of Oxford. The balance of information is given to the less serious aspects of university life: for example, considerably more space is given, in the definition of 'bishop', to a recipe for mulled port wine than to the clerical role. The work abounds in puns (in English and Latin), anecdotes, and extracts (mostly amusing) from more serious histories of the university, and ends with a tailpiece on how to graduate 'the reading way' and 'the varmint way'. This fascinating work demonstrates that the publication of spoof 'guides to freshmen' is nothing new.
