In this anthology an effort has been made to include representative selections from the most significant sixteenth-century French poets. With the exception if a few longer works (mainly those of Ronsard, Du Bartas, and D'Aubign{acute}e), poems are given complete. In addition, the original spelling and punctuation have been retained as far as possible, except for the usual editorial modifications (differentiation of u and v, i and j, the addition of accents áa, oáu, replacement of & by et, and so on). The sixteenth century is a period of tremendous poetic activity. It is a period closer in spirit to us in many ways than the intervening centuries, particularly the seventeenth and the eighteenth. Its poetry is still being rediscovered and re-assessed in a way that is just as exciting as the period of foment during which it was written.

Errance sur les routes de la côte belge, d'hôtel en hôtel, errance dans la nuit de Paris ou de Bruxelles, leurs lieux interlopes et leurs néons criards, errance dans la mémoire trouble des crimes de la guerre d'Algérie: telles sont les atmosphères dans lesquelles nous plonge la poésie de Franck Venaille. Qui fut, comme l'écrivait son ami Lucien Becker, «un des rares poètes qui sache dire des mots de tous les jours», qui sache dire «tout le tragique existant n'importe où et dans n'importe quoi». Avant l'Escaut rassemble dix œuvres poétiques parues entre 1966 et 1989. Chacune tente à sa manière de s'approcher du cœur tragique des choses, de recueillir «cette plainte, comme une sonorité bleue qui proviendrait des murs». Pour laisser venir cette sonorité bleue, l'écriture se fait essentiellement fragmentaire, consentant à ses lacunes, ses heurts, ses déchirures. Franck Venaille résumait ainsi sa manière d'envisager la poésie: «Ce qui reste de. Morceau d'une chose, d'un être, d'une existence. Fragments, manière de concevoir l'écriture pour restituer ainsi le caractère heurté, déchiré de toute fiction.» C'est ce qu'il cherche inlassablement: se laisser tourmenter, mais aussi se laisser mener vers la sainteté, par «ce qui reste de.»
