Primary aluminium is being produced industrially by the Hall-Héroult process for more than 120 years now. Due to the lack of durable and affordable thermocouple protection materials, long-term temperature measurement of the bath is not yet possible. The main incentive for a long-term temperature measurement is to have temperature as an added parameter for better process control of the Hall-Héroult cell. The major technological problem is that no single material is known, which can withstand the concurrent corrosion by cryolite melts and molten aluminium at temperatures of around 1000 °C. This doctoral research focuses on the design and testing of material systems that may allow the long-term temperature measurement to be achieved. The proposed solution is to apply multiple coatings on a metallic tube for thermocouple protection. The top coating is composed of TiB2 produced by atmospheric plasma spraying. To assess the potential success of the TiB2 coating a comprehensive characterisation procedure was developed, which deals with both bulk and surface properties. Through characterisation, the link between the properties and spraying parameters was constructed and a deeper understanding of the APS process is provided. The nature of oxygen in the TiB2 coating was also revealed. It was shown that oxygen may exist in the coating as dissolved atomic oxygen in addition to lattice oxygen in the oxides of boron and titanium. The proposed systems with TiB2 as the top coating were tested at industrial conditions. The degradation mechanisms were discussed through post-mortem investigation of the recovered samples. The obtained knowledge will be very helpful in the continuing development of thermocouple protection materials for long-term temperature measurements. This book brings together leading experts in the field of ancient synagogue studies to discuss the current issues and emerging trends in the study of synagogues in ancient Palestine. Divided into four thematic units, the different contributions apply archaeological, textual, historical and art historical methodologies to questions related to ancient synagogues.
