Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Examining imagery of urban space in Britain, France and West Germany up to the early 1960s, this book reveals how photography shaped individual architectural projects and national rebuilding efforts alike.Exploring the impact of urban photography at a pivotal moment in contemporary European architecture and culture, this book addresses case studies spanning the destruction of the war to the modernizing reconfiguration of city spaces, including ruin photobooks about bombed cities, architectural photography of housing projects and imagery of urban life from popular photomagazines, as well as internationally renowned projects like UNESCO’s Paris Headquarters, Coventry Cathedral and Berlin’s Gedächtniskirche. This book reveals that the ways of seeing shaped in the postwar years by urban photography were a vital aspect of not only discourses on the postwar city but also debates central to popular culture, from commemoration and modernization to democratization and Europeanization. This book will be a fascinating read for researchers in the fields of photography and visual studies, architectural and urban history, and cultural memory and contemporary European history.

Abstract

Abstract

The fields of photography and architecture have long been closely linked : photography provides a powerful way for architecture to be appreciated from a distance, and the camera lens alters and enhances buildings so that they can be appreciated anew, even by those already intimately familiar with them. Concrete explores this deep and often complex relationship, with particular attention paid not only to how photography influences the perception of architecture but also the very design itself. Beginning with the invention of photography in the nineteenth century, this volume presents iconic images of urban architecture and townscapes that are organized thematically rather than simply chronologically. The editors have assembled over two hundred images from numerous notable photographers, including : Georg Aerni, Adolphe Braun, Balthasar Burkhard, Lynn Cohen, Walker Evans, Lucien Hervé, Germaine Krull, Stanley Kubrick, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and William Henry Fox Talbot. Originally published to coincide with an exhibition celebrating the Fotomuseum Winterthur’s twentieth anniversary, Concrete : Photography and Architecture is an exhaustive investigation of architectural photography and is as beautiful as it is informative.

Abstract

"What is the photograph's place in writing the history of sculpture? How has it changed according to culture, generation, critical conviction, and changes in media? Photography and Sculpture: The Art Object in Reproduction studies aspects of these questions from the perspectives of sixteen leading art historians. Their essays--treating issues from the earliest period of photography in the mid-nineteenth century to digital apps and imaging systems--consider iconic photographs, archival collections, technologies, and conceptual challenges in photographing three-dimensional forms that have directed changing historical and stylistic attitudes about how we see, write about, and narrate histories of sculpture"--Back cover.

Abstract

The title of the book sets the two fields of activity pursued by the architect, architectural historian and theorist August Sarnitz – building and writing – in a reciprocal relation: the context to what has been built emerges in the process of writing, just as the context to what has been written emerges in the process of building. The structure of the book follows precisely this reciprocity: an essay about architectural history and Big Data is followed by three on the topics of urban development, social housing, and the fiction of space. A number of influential Viennese architects appear as well: Frank, Kiesler, Hollein and Prix. The topics of housing, design and furniture are all illustrated with Sarnitz’s own projects; the end of the book is dedicated to architectural photography, which is especially important to Sarnitz in his capacity as publicist. The richly illustrated book is the first to document Sarnitz’s work as author, designer, exhibition designer, architect and photographer.

Abstract

Architecture and photography share the condition of being suspended be¬tween fine art and craft. Realism is considered a given, something that happens almost by default. From the moment it is taken, a photograph is un-derstood to be a record of what was in front of the camera—just as a building, as soon as it is inhabited, becomes the fixed backdrop for everyday life.In Epics in the Everyday, Jesús Vassallo explores this condition, tracing a series of collaborations between architects and photographers from the postwar years up to the present. Consistently, the subject matter of these collaborations is the built environment, which presents architects and photographers—in different ways—with a mirror that challenges the idea of realism in their respective disciplines. Beyond casting a diagonal light on important developments within the two individual disciplines, the book chronicles an alternative history of both modern architecture and photography and builds a case for a specific type of realism found at their intersection.
