The longing for nature has never been greater than at a time when more and more people live in densely populated urban centres. The country is a place for relaxation and recreation. Living there is a dream for many people. This book shows over 20 selected houses situated in the middle of nature - structures whose architecture integrates the topographical space of their surroundings in various ways. The examples are located in regions with exceptional landscapes: in the arctic vegetation of Iceland, at the foot of a volcano in the Azores, or in the rock massif of Slovenia's Kanin Mountains. These holiday homes and summer residences, hotels and emergency alpine shelters react to nature in terms of their construction and design and tie inside and outside space together. All projects are documented with brilliant architectural photos, short descriptions as well as floor plans and sections. The project documentation is supplemented by introductory essays with thoughts on building in the country and on the tradition of summer and holiday houses. Many people long to live surrounded by nature. Correspondingly, designing for this goal demands utmost sensitivity. With meticulous concepts, architects must take account of energy and materials issues and react to the topography of the building plot. This book presents selected houses in the Arctic vegetation of Iceland, at the foot of a volcano in the Azores, or in the rock massif of the Alps. Dimanche 26 décembre 2004. La terre tremble au large des côtes de Sumatra. C’est l’un des plus puissants séismes jamais enregistrés (magnitude 9.3). S’en suit un tsunami cataclysmique, le plus meurtrier de l’histoire avec près de 230 000 victimes. Les vagues ont ravagé les côtes indonésiennes proches, avant de se propager vers la Thaïlande, le Sri Lanka, l’Inde puis les côtes africaines. La province d’Aceh, au nord-ouest de Sumatra, est de loin la plus touchée. La moitié de la ville de Banda Aceh est rasée par des vagues de plus de 15 m de haut, l’eau ayant même atteint une hauteur de 50 m sur les falaises de la côte ouest de Lhok Nga. De nombreux villages sont rayés de la carte. Durant près de deux ans (2005-2006), les scientifiques du programme de recherche « Tsunarisque » se sont relayés sur le terrain pour essayer de décrypter, reconstituer le tsunami dans ses moindres détails, afin de tirer les enseignements d’une catastrophe hors norme et de proposer des stratégies de prévention plus efficaces. Cet ouvrage retrace tout ce travail en trois volets : tout d’abord la reconstitution et la modélisation du tsunami, de l’extension des vagues à la cartographie des dégâts infligés au bâti, ensuite l’impact du tsunami sur l’environnement, et notamment les formes d’érosion et de dépôts, et enfin les aspects socioculturels, des facteurs ethniques aux enjeux de la reconstruction et de la prévention.

The obesity crisis has affected many nations. It is also one of the factors listed as a contributing cause to the COVID-19 fatalities. The common tendency is to blame people's dietary choices and sedentary habits. Yet, it can also be argued that social inequity and poor urban planning practices have largely contributed to a lack of active lifestyles. Low-density suburban sprawl, long commutes, food deserts, diminishing green areas are some aspects that have led to reduced physical activity among residents of all ages. The book illustrates the decline of community planning for healthy living and outlines measures that can be reintroduced to foster active lifestyles.
