Erstmals im deutschsprachigen Raum werden in diesem repräsentativen Reader Arbeiten von Harry G. Frankfurt publiziert, dessen Überlegungen bedeutsam wurden für nicht-utilitaristische Werttheorien, für die Ethik der Fürsorge bzw. der Tugendethik, aber auch für die moderne Rationalitätstheorie. Freiheit und Determinismus sind miteinander vereinbar - diese Auffassung vertritt Frankfurt nachdrücklich. Zunächst entwickelte er ein hierarchisches Modell des Wünschens und arbeitete eine philosophische Begründung für das Argument aus, daß die Bedingung, jemand hätte anders handeln können, keine notwendige Bedingung für Freiheit und Verantwortung bildet. In seinen neuesten Arbeiten entwirft er ein umfassenderes Konzept der Selbstbestimmung und der Rationalität, wobei er sein früheres Wunschmodell ersetzt durch ein erweitertes hierarchisches Modell fundamentaler Einstellungen, zu denen neben Wünschen nunmehr auch Überzeugungen und Emotionen zählen, die sich daher zugleich auf Konzeptionen unseres Charakters und unserer Integrität richten.

Autonomy for Kant is not just a synonym for the capacity to choose, whether simple or deliberative. It is what the word literally implies: the imposition of a law on one’s own authority and out of one’s own rational resources. In Kant and the Limits of Autonomy, Shell explores the limits of Kantian autonomy—both the force of its claims and the complications to which they give rise. Through a careful examination of major and minor works, Shell argues for the importance of attending to the difficulty inherent in autonomy and to the related resistance that in Kant’s view autonomy necessarily provokes in us. Such attention yields new access to Kant’s famous, and famously puzzling, Groundlaying of the Metaphysics of Morals. It also provides for a richer and more unified account of Kant’s later political and moral works; and it highlights the pertinence of some significant but neglected early writings, including the recently published Lectures on Anthropology. Kant and the Limits of Autonomy is both a rigorous, philosophically and historically informed study of Kantian autonomy and an extended meditation on the foundation and limits of modern liberalism.

Die europäische Neuzeit ist eine Epoche der Befreiung der Menschen aus kirchlichen, religiösen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Abhängigkeiten. Sie hat zu einer großartigen Entfaltung geistigen Lebens geführt. Ihr Ziel war Selbstbestimmung. Die wurde aber oft im engen Sinn einer Autonomie, einer radikalen Unabhängigkeit verstanden. Thema dieses Buches ist die große Rolle, welche die Idee der Autonomie in der neuzeitlichen Geistesgeschichte und für ihren Verlauf gespielt hat, in Philosophie und Wissenschaften, in Religion, Malerei und Literatur. Thema ist auch das Ende dieser Entwicklung. Die Literatur hat heute weithin ihren Anspruch aufgegeben, Gefühle und Gedanken mitzuteilen, die Malerei ihr Ziel, die Welt in neuem Licht zu zeigen. Die Philosophie zweifelt an einer objektiven Wahrheit und damit an der Möglichkeit von Erkenntnis, und die Neurologen sagen uns, das Projekt der Neuzeit, die Selbstbestimmung des Menschen, sei von Anfang an illusorisch, weil es weder Freiheit gebe noch zu befreiende Subjekte.
