As students are bearing an increasing proportion of the costs of their participation in higher education, increasing attention has been paid nationally and internationally to the issue of what higher education does for its students. What do students gain from engaging in higher education, and how might this be accurately measured? This volume explores the latest thinking, research and practice on this topic from across the globe. Acknowledging that institutions of higher education, along with national governments and international organizations, are closely concerned with the answers to these questions, the authors demonstrate how it is critically important to be able to demonstrate convincingly and transparently how students have progressed, and what measurable skills and knowledge they have acquired.

In this chapter, we draw on an analysis of English policy documents and focus groups with students at three English higher education institutions, to explore some of the complexity in the ways in which the concept of student-as-consumer is discussed by both those formulating policy and the intended recipients. In relation to policies, this is evident in some of the apparent contradictions within government documents which, on one hand, emphasise strongly many aspects of a consumer discourse (foregrounding ideas around investment, choice and ensuring value of money) but, on the other hand, also discuss in some detail the vulnerability of students and their need of protection- which is clearly at odds with the notion of an 'empowered consumer'. With respect to students, a similar degree of complexity can be seen in their differential awareness of the student-as-consumer discourse, and their varied responses to it.

(Psychosozial)

In Europe the social economy employs almost 15 million workers. During the crisis years, unlike other sectors, it has often generated an increase in jobs. The aim of this comparative study is to investigate how to allow the supply and demand for young people to meet in the different types of social economy bodies. In particular, it concentrates on the problem of how to bring into line initial university training and the skills required by these organizations. The focus is placed on the varied family of training workers present in at least 75% of the organizations, whose professionalism is nevertheless rarely acknowledged. The papers proposed in this book try to identify the most suitable solutions at the level of curriculum, career development and accompanying measures, while drawing solutions from objective findings and not from training system needs or convictions.
