Abstract

TBX genes belong to a family of homeotic genes (t-boxes) for which it has been proved that gene mutations have serious consequences on the development. In particular, there is significant evidence to support the involvement of the TBX1 gene in DiGeorge / Velocardiofacial syndrome (DGS/VCFS) and it has been proved that the TBX3 and TBX5 genes are implicated, respectively, in UMS (Ulnar Mammary Syndhrome) and in Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS). The book collects information available in the literature up to October 2001 on human TBX genes. The review of the data allowed to come to interesting considerations and offers ideas for orienting further research.

Abstract

The advances in our understanding of genetics has exploded since the publication of the first edition of Inherited Cancer Syndromes. We’ve moved from an incomplete understanding of the human genome to the availability of over-the-counter DNA analysis kits. There is simply too much complicated, high-level science for a busy clinician to meaningfully absorb without a filter. Inherited Cancer Syndromes is designed to bridge that gap. With this new edition, the clinical content has been expanded and clarified in order to be more tightly focused on the real-world implications of emerging therapies. The chapter authors are among the leading experts in these topics. Naturally, this book is not meant to be an exhaustive “how to” textbook or procedure-heavy monograph, but a clinically relevant overview of this dynamic and difficult aspect of cancer patient care. “ The chapters on syndromes are divided by type of cancer, and each includes discussions of risk assessment, indications for genetic testing, interpretation of test results, and integration into clinical management of risk estimates and results of genetic testing. The chapter on breast cancer also provides an insightful discussion of surrogate end-point markers. Each syndrome of susceptibility to polyposis and nonpolyposis colon cancer is described, with algorithms as to when genetic testing is indicated. Guidelines for prevention and management follow. … This book provides the knowledge base needed for most physicians to incorporate the principles of inherited susceptibility to cancer and genetic testing properly into their practices. It is highly recommended, since many physicians and health care workers have not been trained in this area, which has become an established part of clinical medicine.” Book Review, New England Journal of Medicine Volume 351:2137-2138 November 11, 2004 Number 20.

Abstract

Many previous volumes concerned with methodology in human genetics have been written by research scientists and naturally reflect that culture. Molecular Diagnosis of Genetic Diseases aims to diverge from previous titles by presenting contributions that cover a key method in detail, but are set in the context of a diagnostic area or genetic disease. In this format, the book attempts to cover nearly all of the most common genetic disease diagnostics that are offered as services by clinical molecular genetics laboratories, thus contributing a reasonably comprehensive handbook for this type of center. Most of the authors are active scientists working in clinical diagnostics. The methods reflect their working experience in attempting to assure robust, reli able results, and to include essential controls, quality standards, and interpre tive guides. Molecular Diagnosis of Genetic Diseases is primarily aimed at scien tists, clinicians, and technologists working in clinical molecular genetics, especially those working in, or with, diagnostic laboratories. Others who will find the book useful include students and scientific workers at the interface of research genetics and diagnostics, forensic scientists, and biotechnologists. Those concerned with the commercial development of the diagnostic field and with regulation or improvement in standards in molecular genetics, both in professional bodies or government agencies, will also be interested in this book. In addition, scientists planning to develop novel molecular genetic diagnostics in countries with little or no experience in this field will find the book a usefixl starting point.

Abstract

With molecular biology now allowing greater accuracy in prenatal diagnosis given amounts of fetal material as small as single cells, a major current focus has grown in the development of rapid, cost-effective diagnoses. In Prenatal Diagnosis, top experts provide cutting edge applications for the rapid assessment of fetal aneuploidies and Mendelian disorders on fetal material gained by invasive approaches, as well as procedures being validated for routine, non-invasive clinical analysis of cell free fetal DNA. Following the Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, the chapters feature step-by-step laboratory protocols, lists of the necessary materials, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Thorough and state-of-the-art, Prenatal Diagnosis is an ideal volume for researchers and molecular biologists invested in ever-growing field of prenatal medicine.

Androgen Excess Disorders in Women

Abstract

The field of androgen excess disorders has advanced substantially since the original publication of this book. The Androgen Excess Society (AES) was founded to bring together investigators in the field. A better understanding of the screening, progression, and molecular genetics of nonclassic adrenal hyperplasia (NCAH) has improved the clinical care and diagnostic accuracy of these patients. New criteria for the diagnosis of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were proposed in Rotterdam, criteria that have resulted in controversy and, hopefully, initiation of new studies. The association of insulin resistance with PCOS has been strengthened, and the role of metformin in tre- ing the infertility of the PCOS has been validated. Risks for diabetes and, more cont- versially, cardiovascular disease in women with PCOS have received substantial investigation. Our understanding of the epidemiology and economic impact of these disorders has expanded, emphasizing their critical importance. These are but a few highlights of how the terrain has changed in a relatively brief period of time. In keeping with these advances, the title of this book has been revised to reflect the growing importance of PCOS as the most prevalent androgen excess disorder in women, and arguably, as the one that might have the most serious adverse consequences for general health. There are fewer chapters to provide a more focused elucidation of the area. Several chapters were penned by new (and young) authors who are conducting cutting-edge research in the field.
