Drawing on interviews with Facebook users of different kinds and dialogue with politicians, regulators, civil society and media commentators, as well as detailed documentary scrutiny of legislative and regulatory proposals and Facebook's corporate statements, the book presents a comprehensive but clear overview of the current debate around Facebook, and the global debate on the regulation of social media in the era of 'surveillance capitalism.' Chapters examine the business and growing institutional power of Facebook as it has unfolded over the fifteen years since its creation, the benefits and meanings that it has provided for its users, its disruptive challenge to the contemporary media environment, its shaping of conversations, and the emerging calls for its further regulation. Die Tunesische Revolution von 2010/2011 sowie die postrevolutionäre Phase wurden begleitet von einer regen Kommunikation in sozialen Medien, allen voran Facebook. Die tunesischen User reagierten besonders mit Bildzeichen auf die politische Situation im Land. Dennoch sind die soziokulturellen Dimensionen dieser Online-Bilder während politischer Umbrüche kaum Gegenstand der Forschung.Im Vordergrund der kultursemiotischen Untersuchung steht deshalb die Frage, inwiefern die in Facebook veröffentlichten Bilder zur Ausbildung, Verbreitung und Veränderung der tunesischen Protestkultur beitrugen und damit zu einem geeigneten Mittel für symbolischen Protest wurden. Hinsichtlich der tunesischen Revolution wird eine Auswahl veröffentlichter Bildzeichen mithilfe kultur- und bildsemiotischer Methoden in Verbindung mit qualitativen Interviews von Akteuren des Protests analysiert.Es wird gezeigt, dass durch die Bildkommunikation eine visuelle Protestkultur mit spezifischen Signifikationsnormen und semiotischen Ressourcen entstand. Bilder trugen nicht nur zur Abbildung der revolutionären Proteste bei, sondern dienten primär der Abgrenzung einer widerständigen Kultur unter Kritik gesellschaftlich etablierter Bedeutungsstrukturen. The Tunisian Revolution of 2010–11 was marked by a new culture of online protest. The extensive use of digital icons in social media was one prominent feature of this protest. In this investigation of cultural semiotics, the author traces the formation of collective structures of meaning, demonstrating their significance for revolutionary and post-revolutionary protest.

Wie reguliert man Bedingungen und Organisation der Freiheit? Die Biometrie als eine aktuelle Technologie liberalen Regierens moderner Gesellschaften trägt einerseits zu Regulationen bei, erzeugt andererseits aber stets auch Krisen und Konflikte um die Grenzen der Freiheit. Anstatt die Biometrie von vornherein als ein Herrschaftsinstrument der soziologischen Analyse zuzuführen, diskutiert der Autor zunächst, wie die Materialität der Biometrie überhaupt soziologisch sinnvoll zu befragen ist. Im Rahmen einer Soziologie der Identifikation wird sie als eine Technologie der Regierbarmachung und Selbstregierung skizziert, die verspricht, Steuerungsprobleme moderner Gesellschaften zu lösen. Drei Identifikationsdispositive der Biometrie stehen im Zentrum: das anthropometrische Signalement von Alphone Bertillon, die automatisierte Gesichtserkennung bei Facebook sowie die automatische Grenzkontrollspur »EasyPass«. Der Autor untersucht das jeweilige Zusammenspiel von gesellschaftlichen Problemlagen, Epistemologie und technologischer Bedingung, in dem die biometrische Identifikation als Lösung aufscheint und dabei zugleich Ordnungsoptionen des Sozialen vorprägt.

Daniel Miller spent 18 months undertaking an ethnographic study with the residents of an English village, tracking their use of the different social media platforms. Following his study, he argues that a focus on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram does little to explain what we post on social media. Instead, the key to understanding how people in an English village use social media is to appreciate just how ‘English’ their usage has become. He introduces the ‘Goldilocks Strategy’: how villagers use social media to calibrate precise levels of interaction ensuring that each relationship is neither too cold nor too hot, but ‘just right’.
