Abstract

This handbook proposes to present best practices in managing and leading the 21st century workforce. It offers strategies and tools to cultivate well-being in the present day boundary-less work environment. This handbook provides valuable insights into why employee well-being is such a powerful driver of employee performance and engagement and what organizations can do to enhance workplace well-being and fulfillment. It brings the research on workplace well-being up-to-date while precisely mapping its terrain and extending the scope and boundaries of this field in an inclusive and egalitarian manner.

Abstract

The new trend towards flexible work environments has spurred the debate over the effects of remote work on employees’ behavior and has forced greater consideration of how management control systems must be adjusted to meet the needs of the new work environment. While the existing literature has observed several positive behavioral changes, such as increased performance and effort, counterproductive work behavior has also been identified. Combining an experimental and a case study research approach, the present study investigates whether a management control system can mitigate unwanted behavior during remote work. The experimental study manipulates the use of management controls and analyzes the effects of an enabling vs. a coercive management control system on dishonest behavior. The data reveal that individuals who perceive the system as enabling and feel a connection to the company behave more honestly during remote work. The organizational connection entirely mediates the perception of the management control system on dishonest behavior. To further investigate this effect, a case study approach was applied. Based on interviews, several factors are identified that might impact the enabling perception of the control system in remote work settings. The six factors are divided into situational and individual attributes. About the author Lena Heinz-Schmitt is an External PhD student; she works in a management consulting firm. .

Abstract

In 'Grow and Hide', Colleen M. Grogan details the history of the American health care state and argues that the public has been intentionally misled about the true role of government. The US created a publicly financed system while framing it as the opposite in what Grogan terms the 'grow-and-hide regime.' Today, the state's role is larger than ever, yet it remains largely hidden because stakeholders have repeatedly, and successfully, presented the illusion of minimal government involvement. As Grogan reveals if we want to fix care in America, we need to reimagine the way it is organized, prioritized, funded, and, perhaps most importantly, discussed.

Abstract

"In Public Health Systems in the Age of Financialization, Ana Carolina Cordilha unpacks policy shifts that have transformed public health systems into vehicles for financial speculation and capital accumulation. While it is commonly thought that these systems are being cut back in the period of financialization, the author shows that current changes in public health financing go far beyond budget cuts and privatization measures. She examines how public health systems are adopting financial instruments and participating in financial accumulation strategies, with harmful impacts on transparency, democratic accountability, and health service provision. With an in-depth study of both the French and Brazilian systems, Cordilha explores the different ways in which this process unfolds in central and peripheral countries"--
