Der Band versteht sich als Beitrag zur gegenwärtig hochaktuellen Debatte um den Zusammenhang von Literatur und Wissen und zielt in Anlehnung an die Historische Epistemologie der Wissenschaftsgeschichte auf die Bestimmung einer historischen Epistemologie der Literatur. Diese fragt nicht nach den grundsätzlichen Erkenntnisbedingungen der Literatur als solcher bzw. denen eines universalistischen (Autor-)Subjekts, sondern versucht, die Historizität literarischen Wissens von der Objektivität seiner Formen her zu denken. Literatur weiß etwas – und zwar nicht nur mehr oder weniger Diffuses, sondern durchaus Konkretes, zum Beispiel über Krankheiten, über ökonomische Zusammenhänge oder über Logiken der Rechtsfindung. Gerade in einer Kultur, die sich selbst als Wissens- und Informationsgesellschaft beschreibt, wird deutlich, wie heikel es um die Unterscheidung von „hartem“ (=naturwissenschaftlich-technischem) und „weichem“ (=geisteswissenschaftlich-literaturbasiertem) Wissen steht. Schöne Literatur hat einen binären Leitcode, der sich entschieden von dem der Wissenschaften abgrenzt. Er lautet nicht wahr / falsch, sondern stimmig / nicht-stimmig. Soll heißen: gerade weil die epistemische Grundorientierung von Literatur eine andere ist als die der Wissenschaften, kann Literatur erfolgreich ein Spiel spielen, das da heißt: Ich seh etwas, was du nicht siehst.

In ancient Rome, where literacy was limited and speech was the main medium used to communicate status and identity face-to-face in daily life, an education in rhetoric was a valuable form of cultural capital and a key signifier of elite male identity. To lose the ability to speak would have caused one to be viewed as no longer elite, no longer a man, and perhaps even no longer human. We see such a fantasy horror story played out in the Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass, written by Roman North African author, orator, and philosopher Apuleius of Madauros--the only novel in Latin to survive in its entirety from antiquity. In the novel's first-person narrative as well as its famous inset tales such as the Tale of Cupid and Psyche, the Metamorphoses is invested in questions of power and powerlessness, truth and knowledge, and communication and interpretation within the pluralistic but hierarchical world of the High Roman Empire (ca. 100-200 CE). Discourse, Knowledge, and Power presents a new approach to the Metamorphoses: it is the first in-depth investigation of the use of speech and discourse as tools of characterization in Apuleius' novel. It argues that discourse, broadly defined to include speech, silence, written text, and nonverbal communication, is the primary tool for negotiating identity, status, and power in the Metamorphoses. Although it takes as its starting point the role of discourse in the characterization of literary figures, it contends that the process we see in the Metamorphoses reflects the real world of the second century CE Roman Empire. Previous scholarship on Apuleius' novel has read it as either a literary puzzle or a source-text for social, philosophical, or religious history. In contrast, this book uses a framework of discourse analysis, an umbrella term for various methods of studying the social political functions of discourse, to bring Latin literary studies into dialogue with Roman rhetoric, social and cultural history, religion, and philosophy as well as approaches to language and power from the fields of sociology, linguistics, and linguistic anthropology. Discourse, Knowledge, and Power argues that a fictional account of a man who becomes an animal has much to tell us not only about ancient Roman society and culture, but also about the dynamics of human and gendered communication, the anxieties of the privileged, and their implications for swiftly shifting configurations of status and power whether in the second or twenty-first centuries.

La via del conocimiento de la filosofía natural contrarreformista estuvo condicionada por la necesidad de conciliar el método escolástico con el experimental, a la luz de la evidencia de los nuevos descubrimientos científicos y geográficos. La cosmovisión oficial hizo uso de metodologías del saber, basadas en discursos como el antisupersticioso, en el que se apuntaba a la confluencia de métodos experimentales, religiosos y jurídicos, orientados hacia una interpretación más precisa de la realidad. En La ciencia de Cervantes . se confirma cómo en pasajes que describen exorcismos, interacciones entre animales y seres humanos y exploraciones geográficas de obras cervantinas, como Don Quijote ., Persiles y Sigismunda . y las Novelas ejemplares ., la confluencia de visiones artísticas y científicas de la época se pone de manifiesto. Llama la atención, especialmente, el caso del Coloquio de los perros ., en donde se evidencia un intento de conciliar el conocimiento humanista, escolástico, antisupersticioso y barroco, en línea con otras excepcionales obras neoplatónicas similares, como son tanto el Somnium . de Maldonado como el de Kepler. The Counter-reformation path to natural philosophy was increasingly conditioned by its need to reconciliate the scholastic method with the experimental one, at the light of the evidence of new scientific and geographic discoveries. Official world-view was supported by approaches to knowledge such as the anti-superstitious discourse, which were sustained by the confluence of experimental, religious and legal methodologies, in support of a more accurate interpretation of reality. La ciencia de Cervantes . shows how selected cervantine texts, including the Quixote ., Persiles and Sigismunda ., and the Exemplary Novels ., reflect how the confluence of artistic and scientific views of the period was evidenced in the depiction, among others, of exorcisms, animal-human interactions and geographical explorations. Particularly relevant is the case of the Colloquy of the Dogs ., showing an attempt to reconciliate the conflictive confluence of Humanistic, Scholastic, anti-superstitious and baroque knowledge, in line with other unique Neoplatonist works, such as Maldonado's and Kepler's Somnium .
