Abstract

"The objective of Kengo Kuma is to erase architecture: finding harmony between natural and artificial and mediate the encounter between man and the environment. The drawings collected in this book tell the fading of architecture through textures drawn in graphite that overlap diffferent layers of land, building and sky, in a harmonious whole. Initial sketches go alongside with the study of the technical details that helped it to achieve the final result."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This volume complements the travelling exhibition on Kuma's projects which opens in Syracuse (Sicily) in May. Kuma's creative process and his painstaking work on the material in order to transform it into a building is documented through the presentation of the most important of his architectural works designed between 1994 and 2004. Luigi Alini's essay describes the artist's formative years, analyzing the various aspects of his research through themes and compositional mechanisms that have remained constant, his study and profound knowledge of materials, and the symbiosis between architecture and nature. A selection of Kuma's writings completes the volume.(extrati de www.electaweb.it)

Abstract

Abstract

It is not easy to name an architect who can invent as much, and as poetically and rigorously, as Kengo Kuma. This issue of AV Monographs takes stock of his firm’s extensive output of the past five years through 32 works and 8 projects, presenting them in five groups. From the New National Stadium of Japan which is nearing completion for the Olympic Games to the competition the studio won recently to extend the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, via works like the Victoria & Albert Museum in Scotland, the Cultural Village in the Portland Japanese Garden, the refurbishment of a traditional courtyard-house in Beijing or the Camper Store in Barcelona. This taxonomy gives a good idea of the scope of his ambition.

Abstract

Architecture_Design A luminary in the field of international contemporary architecture, this highly anticipated monograph of Kenzo Kuma's work chronicles close to forty key works from around the globe. Kengo Kuma is a globally acclaimed Japanese architect whose prodigious output possesses an inherent respect and value of materials and environment, often creating a harmonious balance between building and landscape. He masterfully engages both architectural experimentation and traditional Japanes design with twenty-first-century technology, resulting in highly advanced yet beautifully simple, gentle, human-scaled buildings. He's renowned for the drive to search for new materials to replace concrete and steel, seeking a new approach for architecture in a post-industrial society, and fusing interior and exterior realms to make spaces that both create a calming and tranquil atmosphere and which "transform" topography. In the pages of this exquisitely illustrated volume, Kuma presents close to forty of his most recognised and award-winning works, including FRAC Marseille, VetA Dundee, Mont-Blanc Base Camp, and Japan National Stadium. Kuma continues to forge a new design language: in this book he offers the reader deep insight into how he has engaged with different aspects of the architectural discipline by transforming topography, construction, and representation in order to give further progress to his ideas.

Abstract

Abstract

Evanescent Restrained. Ethereal. These are some of the words used to describe the architecture of Kengo Kuma, one of the most heralded of a new generation of Japanese architects. A recent article in ""Architecture writes of Kuma that ""he strives to give his buildings the qualities of a rainbow, composed of shimmering particles, more illusion than object that change as you look at them."" Increasingly the focus of international renown, Kuma's work is characterized by a delicate simplicity and minimalism, incorporating a wide range of ephemeral transparencies. Their ineffable vibrancy is achiev
