Abstract

In 'A Voice of Warning', Parley P. Pratt provides a compelling eyewitness account of the early days of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Using extensive knowledge of the Bible, Pratt quotes scripture and explains how many of the doctrines and practices taught by Christ are missing in Christianity but can be found in the restored Church. This 129-page pamphlet provides a powerful argument that the gospel has been restored and that the gathering of Israel is in process as foretold by ancient prophets. Pratt's work is a must-read for those interested in the history and doctrine of the LDS Church.

Abstract

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormons), often heralded as the fastest growing religion in American history, is facing a crisis of apostasy. Rather than strengthening their faith, the study of church history and scriptures by many members pushes them away from Mormonism and into a growing community of secular ex-Mormons. In Disenchanted Lives, E. Marshall Brooks provides an intimate, in-depth ethnography of religious disenchantment among ex-Mormons in Utah. Showing that former church members were once deeply embedded in their religious life, Brooks argues that disenchantment unfolds as a struggle to overcome the spiritual, social, and ideological devotion ex-Mormons had to the religious community and not out of a lack of dedication as prominently portrayed in religious and scholarly writing on apostasy.

Abstract

The Journal of Mormon History is an official publication of the Mormon History Association (MHA). Its purpose is to publish scholarly work covering the full scope of Mormon history, which represents domestic and international perspectives of the several religious organizations that descend from what was first called the Church of Christ in 1830. MHA, organized in 1965, began publishing the Journal as a single issue in 1974. Single yearly issues continued through 1991 (vols. 1-17; 1986-1987 were combined into one issue, v. 13; no vol. 12 was published). Two issues of the Journal were published annually from 1992 through 2005 (vols. 18-31), and three issues appeared in both 2006 and 2007 (vols. 32-33). Beginning in 2008 (vol. 34) the Journal became a quarterly.

Abstract

"The first fifty years of United States history was a period of seemingly endless possibility. With the birth of a new country during the age of revolutions came new religions, new literary genres, new political parties, temperance and abolitionist societies, and the expansion of print and marketing networks that would dramatically change the course of the century. Envisioning Scripture: Joseph Smith's Revelations in Their Early American Contexts brings together ten essays from leading scholars on the history of early American religion and print culture. Covering issues of gender, race, prophecy, education, scripture, real and narrative time, authority and power, and apocalypticism, the essays invite the reader-scholar, student, etc.-to expand their knowledge of early Mormon history by grasping more fully the American contexts that Mormonism grew out of."--
