Thomas Crawford (1813-1857) was the first American sculptor to study in Italy for an extended period of time. There, along with other artists-Greenough, Story, and Powers-he was part of a groupt hat made prolific contributions to American neoclassical art. Heis best known as the sculptor of much of the statuary and bas-reliefs of our nation's Capitol: the pediment figures over the Senate and of the House of Representatives, and the bronze Freedom atop the Capitol's dome. In writing this biography, Robert Gale was given exclusive access to all of Crawford's personal papers by the sculptor's granddaughter. An appendix lists extant works of Crawford and where they are found, and several plates illustrate his sculpture.

Anglo-American Exchange in Postwar Sculpture, 19451975 redresses an important art historical oversight. Histories of American and British sculpture are usually told separately, with artists and their work divided by nationality; yet such boundaries obscure a vibrant exchange of ideas, individuals, and aesthetic influences. In reality, the postwar art world saw dynamic interactions between British and American sculptors, critics, curators, teachers, and institutions. Using works of art as points of departure, this book explores the international movement of people, objects, and ideas, demonstrating the importance of Anglo-American exchange to the history of postwar sculpture.

Harry Bertoia, Sculptor is devoted to the life and work of a twentieth-century Italian-born American artist whose important commissions are located in twenty-five American cities from New York to Seattle and from Minneapolis to Miami. It traces the development of Bertoia's versatile career from his youth in Detroit, beginning with drawings, paintings, and monoprints, then jewelry and furniture designs, to his abstract sculptures in metals, many of architectural proportions. The book includes a biography of the man and detailed descriptions of his methods of working. Many major sculptures and some minor ones are described in detail. They are critically analyzed for their aesthetic components and the ideas they were intended to express. A large number of photographs supplements the descriptions and analyses. Two appendixes give chronologies of the artist's life and of his architectural commissions, the latter virtually a catalog of Bertoia's major works. Based on several extensive interviews with the artist, as well as on research into his earlier writings, the book includes Bertoia's thoughts on aesthetics and various phases of the art processes he uses. His work is categorized into four major aesthetic explorations that interested him most of his life.
