Abstract

Sabrinae Corolla, published in 1850, takes its name from a poem by John Milton. It is a collection of poems from a wide range of sources, mainly in English but also in German, Greek and Italian, with translations into Greek or Latin on the facing page. It was edited by the Victorian classicist Benjamin Hall Kennedy (1804-1889), most famous for his Latin primer (also available in this series), and the translations were made by some of Kennedy's former students at Shrewsbury School, who are named in a separate list. The book contains Latin versions of works including the eighteenth-century Scottish poet Tobias Smollett's My Native Stream, the German Friedrich Schiller's Hektors Abschied, and Greek renditions of Shelley's The World's Wanderers and Voltaire's Enigma. It also includes nine illustrations.

Abstract

Thomas Hill Green (1836-82) was one of the most influential English thinkers of his time, and he made significant contributions to the development of political liberalism. Much of his career was spent at Balliol College, Oxford: having begun as a student of Benjamin Jowett, he later acted effectively as his second-in-command at the college. Interested for his whole career in social questions, Green supported the temperance movement, the extension of the franchise, and the admission of women to university education. He became Whyte's professor of moral philosophy at Oxford in 1878, and his lectures had a lasting influence on a generation of students. Volume 3, published in 1888, contains a memoir by Nettleship, Green's pupil and editor, drawing on Green's recollections, as well as the memories of friends and family. The rest of the volume consists of essays on topics ranging from Aristotle to Christian dogma.

Abstract

Ninety years after the discovery of human influenza virus, Modern Flu traces the history of this breakthrough and its implications for understanding and controlling influenza ever since. Examining how influenza came to be defined as a viral disease in the first half of the twentieth century, it argues that influenza’s viral identity did not suddenly appear with the discovery of the first human influenza virus in 1933. Instead, it was rooted in the development of medical virus research and virological ways of knowing that grew out of a half-century of changes and innovations in medical science that were shaped through two influenza pandemics, two world wars, and by state-sponsored programs to scientifically modernise British medicine. A series of transformations, in which virological ideas and practices were aligned with and incorporated into medicine and public health, underpinned the viralisation of influenza in the 1930s and 1940s. Collaboration, conflict and exchange between researchers, medical professionals and governmental bodies lay at the heart of this process. This book is a history of how virus researchers, clinicians, and epidemiologists, medical scientific and public health bodies, and institutions, and philanthropies in Britain, the USA and beyond, forged a new medical consensus on the identity and nature of influenza. Shedding new light on the modern history of influenza, this book is a timely account of how ways of knowing and controlling this intractable epidemic disease became viral. Michael Bresalier is Lecturer in the History of Medicine and co-director of the Medical Humanities Research Centre at Swansea University, in the UK.

Abstract

The voice of memory rings loud and clear on the pages of the new issue of 'AV Monographs', a compilation of conversations that Luis Fernández-Galiano has had over the years with ten masters recounting their respective lives and professional trajectories. Arranged by age of the speakers – from Frank Gehry, the most veteran of all, to Bjarke Ingels – and transcribed in the form of monologues, the interviews trace the biographical journey of each architect, from family origins, upbringing, and educational training to latest projects at the time of the dialogue, and are illustrated with the most characteristic works and projects of their career.
