Abstract

How do you plan for both the transport mode and urban development in an integrated fashion? How do you assess the effectiveness of infrastructure investment from an accessibility perspective, and who should do what to ensure implementation? In seeking to answer such questions, this book argues that a focus on accessibility is key to the successful integration of urban planning and transport planning, as both seek to provide citizens with access to opportunities. With an underlying principle of achieving sustainable development, urban planners, politicians and community advocates are now demanding a new approach to planning urban areas and transport networks which provides for accessibility, rather than simply assuming mobility, especially by private car. This book shows how, and why, we can successfully plan for sustainable accessibility through urban development planning and transport planning practices. Employing a multi-dimensional perspective, sustainable accessibility is considered through the lens of different residents and their daily needs. Through the lens of a `mobility pyramid', starting from not travelling, through walking, cycling and public transport to private car, it examines three different spatial scales: Metropolitan, Town Centres, and Neighbourhoods. There is a strong focus on their qualities of `place'; and on governance, considering who should take action, and how processes of implementation influence the effectiveness of design approaches. This innovative multi-dimensional perspective re-frames the traditional approaches and offers the reader an appreciation of the bigger picture of what is needed to plan for sustainable accessibility, while at the same time gaining knowledge of specific details that are necessary for its implementation.

Abstract

Will we soon be driven by autonomous electric taxis rather than steering our own car? Should cities introduce car sharing? What role will electric scooters, cable cars or man-carrying drones play? This book finally explains understandably what buzzwords like e-mobility, autonomous driving, digitalization, and mobility as a service really mean, how far advanced these technologies are today, and above all how they mutually depend on each other. In addition to the technical aspects, also legislative and social trends are considered, which represent important framework conditions with decisive influence on the mobility of the future. From the contents - Mobility needs: Who wants to go where, when, and why - and how will this change? - Technological trends: e-mobility, digitalization, autonomous driving - what will the vehicles of the future be capable of? - Car sharing, ride-hailing, e-scooters or public transport: What are future alternatives to the private car? - Politics and society: How will the framework conditions for mobility develop in the future? - Mobility in transition: What should we do to prepare for the future? About the author For many years, Dr. Julian Weber headed BMW's e-mobility innovation incubator, where he is today responsible for the digital transformation through utilization of vehicle generated data. Since 2008, he has been an adjunct professor at the Department of Automotive Engineering at Clemson University (USA). This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. .

Abstract

This textbook covers the theoretical principles and technology of railway and tramway vehicles. In addition to the legal principles, driving resistances, drives, brakes, running dynamics and running gears as well as the supporting structures and superstructures are dealt with. Great importance is attached to clear illustrations and numerous examples. With the help of this book, even engineers and railway enthusiasts from other disciplines can successfully familiarize themselves with the field of railway vehicle technology. The present edition has been revised and supplemented by the chapter "Engineering in rail vehicle construction". The contents Introduction - Driving resistances of rail vehicles - Driving machines, power transmission - Brakes for rail vehicles - Wheelset guidance, suspension, damping - Structures and superstructures of rail vehicles - Engineering in rail vehicle construction. The target groups - Students of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering - Engineers who need to familiarize themselves with the field of rail vehicles The author Dr. Joachim Ihme is a lecturer in rail vehicle technology at Ostfalia HaW (formerly Braunschweig/Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences). Until the end of 2015, he was a professor at this university specializing in machine elements, strength of materials, logistics and rail vehicles. His university activities were preceded by several years of employment with a rail vehicle manufacturer. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.
