Contraction des première et dernière syllabes des noms d'AMsterdam, de BRUges et de VeNISE, le "sigle" Ambrunise pourrait s'inscrire en lettres capitales, dans nos atlas, à l'emplacement de ce "petit promontoire" de l'Asie, d'où est sortie la grande aventure des temps modernes. En un premier volet s'inscrit un survol historique de quatre millénaires où, de ziggourats en pyramides et de tour de Babel en beffrois, sa marque l'apogée de l'"homo occidentalis", créateur de la civilisation industrielle universelle. Dans le deuxième volet, l'auteur parcourt Ambrunise, dont il entend tracer une "caricature à la pointe sèche". Nous sommes dans la cité contemporaine où coexistent les sept cercles de l'Enfer, décrits en une série d'images truculentes, enchaînées par une verve visionnaire qui n'est pas sans évoquer Kafka, Alphonse Allais et James Ensor. La "Lettres aux Ambrunitiens", qui forme le troisième volet, permet à Mark Eyskens de faire l'éblouissante synthèse d'une société en perpétuel devenir, donc condamnée à se chercher, et qui écrase, dans son superbe défoulement, tous les mythes, tous les ismes, à l'exception de deux d'entre eux : la primauté du spirituel et un humanisme qui refuse de disparaître. Cette œuvre n'est ni un témoignage, ni une démonstration, mais un essai construit librement, avec ingéniosité et imagination, et dans lequel se juxtapose la triple évocation d'une société qui, peu ou prou, se prépare à faire face à de redoutables et imminentes échéances.

Dans une société qui conçoit le travail comme un devoir moral engageant la responsabilité individuelle de chacun, l’absence ou le manque de travail rend suspect. Souvent associé à l’oisiveté, « mère de tous les vices », le chômage est à la fois un risque social, contre lequel ont été mises en place des protections collectives, et une réalité vécue de manière personnelle. Parfois vu comme une victime, le chômeur est aussi souvent soupçonné d’être responsable de sa situation, par manque de formation, par absence de motivation, voire par goût de la paresse. En période de plein-emploi, les sans-emploi sont accusés de vouloir vivre au crochet de la société. En temps de crise, les chômeurs sont perçus comme une menace pour l’ordre social et la démocratie, ainsi que pour les finances publiques et les dispositifs de protection sociale.

"The twelfth century in Europe has been hailed by historians as a time of intellectual and spiritual vitality, setting the stage for the subsequent flowering of European thought. Robert Chazan points out, however, that the "twelfth-century renaissance" had a dark side: the marginalization of minorities emerged as part of a growing pattern of persecution, and among those stigmatized the Jews figured prominently." "The migration of Jews to northern Europe in the late tenth century led to the development of a new set of Jewish communities. This new northern Jewry, which came to be called Ashkenazic, grew strikingly during the eleventh and twelfth centuries and spread from northern France and the Rhineland across the English Channel to the west and eastward through the German lands and into Poland. Despite some difficulties, the northern Jews prospered, tolerated by the dominant Christian society in part because of their contribution as traders and moneylenders. Yet at the end of this period, the rapid growth and development of these Jewish communities came to an end and a sharp decline set in. Chazan locates the cause of the decline primarily in the creation of new, negative images and stereotypes of Jews." "Tracing the deterioration of Christian perceptions of the Jew, Chazan shows how these novel and damaging twelfth-century stereotypes developed. He identifies their roots in traditional Christian anti-Jewish thinking, the changing behaviors of the Jewish minority, and the deepening sensitivities and anxieties of the Christian majority. Particularly striking was the new and widely held view that Jews regularly inflicted harm on their neighbors out of profound hostility to Christianity and Christians. Such notions inevitably had an impact on the policies of both church and state, and Chazan goes on to chart the powerful, lasting role of the new anti-Jewish image in the historical development of antisemitism."
