This text provides an overview of interactionism in the United Kingdom. The authors argue that few sociologists in Britain have identified themselves solely with symbolic interactionism, even though many have engaged with interactionist ideas in their research and methodological work.

New genetic technologies cut across a range of public regulatory domains and private lifeworlds, often appearing to generate an institutional void in response to the complex challenges they pose. As a result, a number of new social formations are being developed to legitimate public engagement and avoid the perceived democratic deficit that may result. Réunissant les contributions de plusieurs sociologues le présent ouvrage a pour objectif de retracer les principaux courants de recherches sociologiques sur l’éducation depuis 1945 dans un certain nombre de pays européens : l’Allemagne, le Royaume-Uni, l’Italie, l’Espagne, la Grèce et les Pays-Bas. Les contributions que nous présentons ici proposent au lecteur français un aperçu historique de l’évolution de ce champ de recherches en relation non seulement avec la discipline mère mais encore avec d’autres disciplines académiques qui traitent de l’éducation. La perspective adoptée par les différents auteurs est de resituer les approches théoriques et les démarches de recherche dans les contextes historiques, sociaux et institutionnels qui les ont engendrées. Il s’agit d’une perspective globale qui, tout en décrivant les principaux résultats des recherches concrètes, étayés par une bibliographie abondante, tente d’offrir des repères concis aux lecteurs francophones animés par la curiosité intellectuelle et par le désir de comprendre les cadres d’interprétation à l’œuvre dans les productions sociologiques européennes.
