Onderzoek naar de ruimtelijke inrichting en het gebruik van onbestemde gebieden rond en tussen dorpen en steden. Aan dit boek, uitgegeven door het Ruimtelijk Planbureau, is de mysterieuze titel 'Tussenland' gegeven. Met tussenland bedoelen ontwerpers en onderzoekers (op het terrein van de ruimtelijke ordening) de gebieden tussen en rond dorpen en steden die rommelig zijn, half- of onbebouwd, met kassen, soms met wat huizen. Maar nooit optimaal gestructureerd, niet geplaatst in een kader van een doordacht ruimtelijk ontwerp en nooit onderdeel uitmakend van een ruimtelijk beleid. In het boek worden delen die onder het zogenoemde 'tussenland' vallen, op boeiende wijze in beeld gebracht. Ook de tussenland-gebieden in het buitenland worden getoond, bijvoorbeeld in Opper-Silezië, Denemarken, Zweden en Italië. Vervolgens kijken de samenstellers naar de tussenland-gebieden in Nederland. De vraag wordt opgeworpen: is het rommel die moet verdwijnen? Of is het interessant, romantisch zelfs? Die vragen mogen de lezers beantwoorden. Met foto's in kleur, statistieken, landkaarten en heel veel informatie. Voor een brede doelgroep. Een prachtig tijdsbeeld!

Trading Places rethinks, develops, and tests design-driven practices and methods to engage with participation in public space and public issues. With this book we aim to help art and design researchers, students, practitioners, and the multiple stakeholders they collaborate with, to explore what participatory ways of working in our contemporary urban environment entail. Six approaches are discussed: intervention, performative mapping, play, data mining, modelling in dialogue, and curating.
