Sans doute peu de lecteurs du XXIe siècle répondraient-ils positivement à la question posée en tête de ce volume. Et le fait même de la formuler pourra paraître incongru à certains. Ce serait ignorer, cependant, qu'en plein siècle des Lumières, de nombreuses voix se sont élevées afin de mettre en doute les progrès dont on se targuait généralement dans les différents domaines de la connaissance, des arts, ou de la littérature. Et ces voix n'émanaient pas que des anti-Philosophes, loin de là ! Dans le camp philosophique lui-même, en effet, les plus grands auteurs - Rousseau, bien sûr, mais aussi Voltaire ou Montesquieu, par exemple - n'ont pas manqué de comparer défavorablement leur propre époque aux précédentes, jugées plus fastes, plus sages, ou comme ayant fait preuve d'un goût plus sûr. L'Antiquité, cela va sans dire, se taille la part du lion dans ces flatteuses appréciations, mais aussi, notamment, un XVIIe siècle que l'éclat du Roi-Soleil nimbe encore d'un énorme prestige. Tour à tour, tous les domaines de la vie sociale sont passés au crible par les censeurs des turpitudes du siècle : décadence des mœurs et de l'art de gouverner, laxisme des couvents, recul de la musique religieuse « inspirée » devant un art désormais voué au seul plaisir, vogue dangereuse du « trop facile » roman, utopies aventureuses menaçant l'ordre social, etc. Face à ce constat plutôt inquiétant, nombreux sont les auteurs qui finissent par se résigner à imputer aux "lois de l'histoire", ou même parfois à celles de l'évolution de l'espèce humaine, cette "décadence" somme toute inévitable puisqu'elle se trouve en germe dans tous les apogées. On se convainc par conséquent, en lisant ce volume, que derrière le masque optimiste des Lumières et le rêve qu'elles portent d'un avenir meilleur, les hommes du dix-huitième siècle pressentaient avec acuité, mais non sans trouble, l'approche d'une impasse sociétale qui allait bientôt conduire aux bouleversements que l'on sait. Entre nostalgie d'un passé déjà révolu et anticipations audacieuses d'un futur encore espéré, la tension était manifestement devenue trop forte. À l'appel du Groupe d'étude du XVIIIe siècle de l'Université libre de Bruxelles, une quinzaine de chercheurs belges, français et italiens se sont penchés sur ce thème, sans doute trop peu étudié jusqu'à présent.

Prokop (6th century AD) came from Caesarea in Palestine and received a rhetorical and juridical education. From 527 onwards, he was a secretary and legal adviser on the staff of the emperor's commander Belisar, whom he accompanied to all the battlefields. In his main work ("Wars", Bella), stylistically and linguistically oriented towards the classical models of Greek historiography, he described the wars of Emperor Justinian (527-565) against the Persians, the Vandals in North Africa and the Goths in Italy. As a supplement to this work, he wrote a polemic (invective) under the title Anékdota ("The Unpublished"), in which he painted the image of the emperor and his entourage in the darkest colours, while in a panegyric entitled "Buildings" (De aedificiis) he glorified the same emperor, especially his work as a builder - a paradox that is difficult to interpret.In this introduction, the three works of Prokop are presented in detail and overarching themes, especially the claim to truth, the sources, the credibility and method as well as Prokop's historical thinking, are dealt with according to the current state of research. Prokop (6. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) stammte aus Caesarea in Palästina und absolvierte eine rhetorische und juristische Ausbildung. Seit 527 gehörte er als Sekretär und Rechtsberater zum Stab des kaiserlichen Feldherrn Belisar, den er auf allen Kriegsschauplätzen begleitete. In seinem stilistisch und sprachlich an den klassischen Vorbildern der griechischen Geschichtsschreibung orientierten Hauptwerk ("Kriege", Bella) beschrieb er die Kriege Kaiser Justinians (527-565) gegen die Perser, die Vandalen in Nordafrika und die Goten in Italien. Als Ergänzung zu diesem Werk verfasste er unter dem Titel Anékdota ("Unveröffentlichtes") eine Schmähschrift (Invektive), in der er das Bild des Kaisers und seines Umfelds in den schwärzesten Farben malte, während er in einer Lobschrift (Panegyrikus) mit dem Titel "Bauten" (De aedificiis) denselben Kaiser, insbesondere dessen Wirken als Bauherr, verherrlichte - ein schwierig zu deutendes Paradoxon.In der vorliegenden Einführung werden die drei Werke Prokops ausführlich vorgestellt und auch übergreifende Themen, vor allem der Wahrheitsanspruch, die Quellen, die Glaubwürdigkeit und Methode sowie das Geschichtsdenken Prokops, auf dem aktuellen Stand der Forschung behandelt.

Il presente volume affronta per la prima volta l'ambito dei rapporti italo-svizzeri da una prospettiva metodologica che fa riferimento agli studi culturali, alla storia delle idee e alla storia degli intellettuali. In una serie di saggi - basati su documenti spesso inediti scaturiti dallo scavo archivistico che le autrici e gli autori hanno condotto nell'ambito del progetto ricerca FNS «La gita a Chiasso. Trent'anni di sconfinamenti culturali tra Italia e Svizzera (1935-1965)» - si ricostruisce la complessa mappa delle relazioni che tra gli ultimi anni del regime fascista e l'immediato dopoguerra stava alla base della mediazione culturale tra i due paesi. Emergono così nodi e crocevia di una rete che attraversa i confini, in cui si intrecciano interessi culturali, economici e politici.

This book pursues two meanings of the phrase, "sustaining New Orleans." One is the perpetuation of the images and ideas and tales of New Orleans sustained in public memory--local and not--through a range of activities and media, widely read literature notable among them. The other references the concept sustainability understood here to mean the struggle to balance the competing demands of social justice, environmental health, and economic growth. This book argues that these two definitions of sustaining New Orleans are mutually constitutive. It further argues that widely read literature set in the city, through its engagement with urban folkways that shape and reshape public memory, has participated, for good and ill, in the framing of the city's problems, the proposed solutions to those problems, and the perceived effectiveness of those solutions.
