Abstract

"Delft Design Guide provides an overview of the perspectives, models, approaches, and methods used in the bachelor's and master's curriculum of Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Some of these are unique to the university, others are well known and are used by designers worldwide. Designing products and services at this faculty is considered a systematic and structured activity, deliberately and purposefully, and with moments of increased creativity. The methods and techniques are each described in a practical one page text, illustrated for further clarification and enriched with images that should encourage reflection and further reading. Design students can use the book as a reference guide in their design projects and in managing their personal development. Design teachers can use the book as a reference guide to assist students in learning a method. Design professionals can use the book as a reference guide to support their design processes."

Abstract

"This edited collection seeks to historicize and theorize technology's role in architectural design. Arguing that the technical tools of design have often been flattened into the broader celebratory rhetoric of innovation, the volume editors and contributors seek to situate these tools on a broader epistemological canvas. How do these tools reflect architecture's changing relationship to evidence: from an emphasis on historical forms and traditions leading up to the 20th Century to a reliance on scientific and empirical data in the 21st. Organized around eight design techniques- rendering, scanning, modeling, controlling, specifying, networking, imaging, and lodging - this project blends discourses in architecture, media studies, history of technology and philosophy"--

Abstract

"Written for students and professionals alike, this book presents a concise and well-illustrated overview of the most important techniques available for reducing energy footprints along with the professional context for their use. In addition to tackling the discipline's ethical responsibilities, each chapter takes on specific considerations such as rainwater harvesting, gray-water recycling, passive heating techniques, green roofs, wind energy, daylighting, indoor air quality, material evaluation, and green building certification programs. Founded in the three Rs of environmentalism: reduce, reuse, and recycle, Sustainable Design encompasses a critical fourth: rethink" [Publisher]

Abstract

Twenty-Five Buildings Every Architect Should Understand is an essential companion to Simon Unwin’s Analysing Architecture, and part of the trilogy which also includes his Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think as an Architect. Together the three books offer an introduction to the workings of architecture providing for the three aspects of learning: theory, examples and practice. Twenty-Five Buildings focusses on analysing examples using the methodology offered by Analysing Architecture, which operates primarily through the medium of drawing. In this second edition five further buildings have been added to the original twenty from an even wider geographical area, which now includes the USA, France, Italy, Mexico, Switzerland, Spain, Finland, Germany, Australia, Norway, Sweden, India and Japan. The underlying theme of Twenty-Five Buildings Every Architect Should Understand is the relationship of architecture to the human being, how it frames our lives and orchestrates our experiences; how it can help us make sense of the world and contribute to our senses of identity and place. Exploring these dimensions through a wide range of case studies that illustrate the rich diversity of twentieth and twenty-first century architecture, this book is essential reading for every architect.

Abstract

Synopsis The physical scale model is often cited as an important tool of communication for architecture students and practitioners alike. Although the proliferation of CAD programmes has enabled the creation of increasingly complex computer models and virtual environments, there is also a growing need to address the three-dimensional qualities of architecture that may be lost when using such media. This book focuses on the inspiring possibilities for modelling the built environment with all the different media and techniques that are now available. Through description of the use of different models in different contexts, the book provides a practical and effective guide to how and why models are used, in addition to what they are used for, and, furthermore, how they relate to architecture education. Following a brief introduction, the book is divided into three sections: Media, Types and Applications. The book is generously illustrated with photographs of models, accompanying commentaries, and step-by-step practical instructions on the various techniques associated with modelmaking. "Architectural Modelmaking" will provide a concise yet broad 'toolbox' for students of architecture. http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/nick+dunn/architectural+modelmaking/7619695/ (7/12/10)
