Abstract

This is the first book to examine the entire Salk Institute complex which is often considered to be Kahn’s most important commission. An in-depth examination, focusing on the design development, is offered of the built Laboratory building, the unbuilt Meeting House, the unbuilt Visiting Fellows residences and of the overall site planning of the complex, with Jonas Salk’s role in the decision-making process is highlighted. This book is also a study of the Institute in the context of Kahn’s entire architectural career and new observations are offered of his major works. It is the product of over forty years of on-and-off thinking about Louis Kahn’s work based on research at the Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania and the Special Collections Library at the University of California at San Diego. The 194 images, of which 95 are in colour, include newly published photos of the Institute, plus extensive selections from the Kahn archive. A design and construction chronology is provided, as well as documentation such as Jonas Salk’s 1984 AIA memorial lecture in honour of Louis Kahn, plus an extensive bibliography.

Abstract

This work is a personal account of the origins and early years of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Bourgeois crafts an engaging study that draws on her involvement with the Institute and on related archives, interviews, and informal conversations. The volume discusses the people who founded the Institute and built a home for renowned research-leading scientists of the time as well as non-scientists of stature in finance, politics, philanthropy, publishing, and the humanities. The events that brought people together, the historic backdrop in which they worked, their personalities, their courage and their visions, their clash of egos and their personal vanities are woven together in a rich, engaging narrative about the founding of a world-premier research institution.

Abstract

Synthetic Polypeptides as Antigens is the first volume to give a comprehensive treatment under one cover of the various techniques used for synthesizing peptides by the solid phase approach, for coupling them to carrier molecules and analyzing their immunochemical activity by a variety of immunoassays. This book also describes methods for analyzing the antigenic structure of proteins and predicting the location of their antigenic sites. Recent advances in the detection of gene products with antipeptide antibodies, and the still controversial use of synthetic peptides as vaccines are
