Abstract

Ancient glass beads as a window to the ancient world Glass beads, both beautiful and portable, have been produced and traded globally for thousands of years. Modern archaeologists study these artifacts through sophisticated methods that analyze the glass composition, a process which can be utilized to trace bead usage through time and across regions. This book publishes open-access compositional data obtained from laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry, from a single analytical laboratory, providing a uniquely comparative data set. The geographic range includes studies of beads produced in Europe and traded widely across North America and beads from South and Southeast Asia traded around the Indian Ocean and beyond. The contributors provide new insight on the timing of interregional interactions, technologies of bead production and patterns of trade and exchange, using glass beads as a window to the past. This volume will be a key reference for glass researchers, archaeologists, and any scholars interested in material culture and exchange; it provides a wide range of case studies in the investigation and interpretation of glass bead composition, production and exchange since ancient times. Abstract

Domestic devotion has become an increasingly important area of research in recent years, with the publication of a number of significant studies on the early modern period in particular. This Special Issue aims to build on these works and to expand their range, both geographically and chronologically. This collection focuses on lived religion and the devotional practices found in the domestic settings of late medieval and early modern Europe. More particularly, it investigates the degree to which the experience of personal or familial religious practice in the domestic realm intersected with the more public expression of faith in liturgical or communal settings. Its broad geographical range (spanning northern, southern, central and eastern Europe) includes practices related to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This Special Issue will be of interest to historians, art historians, medievalists, early modernists, historians of religion, anthropologists and theologians, as well as those interested in the history of material religious culture. It also offers important insights into research areas such as gender studies, histories of the emotions and histories of the senses.

Abstract

Although the use of water-soluble polymer beads is on the rise in many fields, the literature offers only scattered chapters in a handful of books on the topic. Polymer Macro- and Micro-Gel Beads: Fundamentals and Applications fills this void. It covers both the properties and traditional and novel applications of polymeric beads, making it a crucial addition to the literature. This book describes numerous methods of bead production, as well as the techniques used to modify them and to estimate their physical and chemical properties. A full description of past and present developments and applications of beads in the fields of agriculture, biotechnology, environmental studies, medicine, pharmacology, and food are presented. Amos Nussinovitch is a Professor of Food Science and Technology at The Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is an internationally recognized expert on hydrocolloid applications and works in the areas of structure and texture of wet and dry beads, liquid-core capsules, different polymeric beads for water denitrification and beads as part of novel cellular solids, among many other applications.

Abstract

The archaeological sites of the Indus Valley show that the craft of carnelian bead-making goes back several thousands of years. 'Ibday it is still racticed in a few rare places, such as the Indian city of Cambay (Gujarat), ofiering a unique opportunity for researchers to construct a modern reference base. With this objective in mind, appropriate investigative methods were developed. They have resulted in interpretative rules relating to technical processes, knapping skills, and the teclmo-system. These rules enable us to interpret the beadsfrom Indus and Mesopotamia in terms of production and distribution networks. These welltfounded interpretations allow the formulation of new hypotheses concerning thefitnction of certain beads and the conditions of their appearance. This book comes with a PC /Mac compatible CD-Rom. Scientific constntcts are presented in aformalized wayfin quick access to the main results as well as…

Abstract

Abstract

The large production and widespread daily consumption of plastic materials which began in the last century, together with the often inadequate collection and recycling systems, have made plastics and, consequently, microplastics (MPs) ubiquitous pollutants. Microplastic pollution as a global concern is confirmed by the research papers collected in this Special Issue; these papers come from 28 Universities and research institutions and are spread across ten countries on three continents. This Special Issue collected and published 11 novel contributions focusing on microplastics in aquatic environments, their occurrence and distribution, and the effects they might have on the environment and biota. As Guest Editors of this Special Issue, we were pleased to receive several papers concerning the interaction between microplastics and biota; despite a large number of peer-reviewed papers published on this research topic, there are still several gaps that need to be filled and there is concrete evidence suggesting that microplastic pollution may constitute a serious hazard to aquatic biota. The results of the contributions collected herein have helped to fill some knowledge gaps about the occurrence, distribution, and effects of microplastics on aquatic ecosystems. The outcomes clearly indicate that microplastic pollution is a serious environmental issue; the scientific community should increase its knowledge and understanding of how it could affect the environment, biota, and humans, and how it could be reduced and prevented.
