Abstract

In recent years research on ischemic stroke has developed powerful therapeutic tools. The novel frontiers of stem cells therapy and of hypothermia have been explored, and novel brain repair mechanisms have been discovered. Limits to intravenous thrombolysis have been advanced and powerful endovascular tools have been put at the clinicians' disposal. Surgical decompression in malignant stroke has significantly improved the prognosis of this often fatal condition. This book includes contributions from scientists active in this innovative research. Stroke physicians, students, nurses and technicians will hopefully use it as a tool of continuing medical education to update their knowledge in this rapidly changing field.

Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging provides non-invasive information about the brain's blood flow, water movement and biochemical abnormalities following stroke, and advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are transforming the investigation and treatment of cerebrovascular disease. Echoplanar techniques with diffusion and perfusion weighted imaging, together with developments in magnetic resonance spectroscopy and angiography, are replacing CT scanning as the diagnostic modality of choice. In this profusely illustrated book world leaders in these technologies review the scientific basis and clinical applications of MRI in stroke. It will appeal to a broad readership including stroke physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists, and others with a clinical or research interest in cerebrovascular disease.

Abstract

This volume is the fourth in a series developed under the auspices of the World Federation of Neurology to meet the needs of neurologists who must practice medicine without many of the advantages that are often taken for granted in the industrialized world. It is targeted to neurologists practicing in low-resource environments and those who wish to practice cost-effective neurology, and addresses issues important for neurologists in developing countries that are not covered in standard textbooks.

Abstract

There are numerous elaborate and comprehensive textbooks and guidelines on stroke. However, busy clinicians are constantly bombarded with new knowledge for an infinite number of medical conditions. It becomes a challenge for them to tease out the important information that will help guide them through the care of the patient they have right before them. This handbook was thus conceptualized with both the busy clinician and the stroke patient needing urgent treatment in mind. By providing only essential information in a standard and user-friendly layout, it assists clinicians in making real-tim

Abstract

Strokes afflict thousands of people every year. Yet, for every fatal case, many more victims survive, often going on to live long, productive lives. Of course, none of it is simple-not preventing a ""brain attack,"" nor survival, rehabilitation, or living with cerebrovascular disease. The key is education, for both the moment of crisis and the long term. Navigating the Complexities of Stroke provides a practical guide for the lay public and medical professionals. Dr. Louis R. Caplan, one of the world's leading experts, guides readers through the subject in a straightforward and accessible mann
