Glavni cilj knjige je predstaviti način upravljanja s kulturnimi vrednotami v lokalni skupnosti. Z njo želimo sprožiti nove razvojne impulze in hkrati prispevati k ohranjanju kulture in opolnemočenja lokalne skupnosti.

The backlash against globalization and the rise of cultural anxiety has led to considerable re-thinking among social scientists. This book provides multiple theoretical, historical, and methodological orientations to examine these issues. While addressing the rise of populism worldwide, the volume provides explanations that cover periods of both cultural turbulence and stability. Issues addressed include populism and cultural anxiety, class, religion, arts and cultural diversity, global environment norms, international trade, and soft power. The interdisciplinary scholarship from well-known scholars questions the oft-made assumption in political economy that holds culture "constant," which in practice means marginalizing it in the explanation. The volume conceptualizes culture as a repertoire of values and alternatives. Locating human interests in underlying cultural values does not make political economy's strategic or instrumental calculations of interests redundant: the instrumental logic follows a social context and a distribution of cultural values, while locating forms of decision-making that may not be rational.

This book re-visits and re-thinks some recent defining events in Irish society. Some of these are high profile and occupy a prominent place in public consciousness, such as the announcement of the banking guarantee and the publication of the Ryan report into clerical child abuse, while others are 'fringe' events which attracted less attention, such as the launch of Indymedia.ie, or were widely discussed in popular culture, like the publication of Donal {acute}Og Cusack's autobiography or the opening of Dundrum Town Centre. The book critically explores issues of equality, belonging and rights as they impact on diverse communities in Ireland, be they older people, migrants or LGBT people. As focal points for each chapter, all of the events covered in the book provide rich insights into the dynamics of Irish society in the twenty-first century. All expose underlying and complex issues of identity, power and resistance that animate public debate. In so doing, the book ultimately encourages readers to question the sources of, limits and obstacles to change in contemporary Ireland. This book brings together in a single volume the experience, research and analysis of critical commentators from a diverse range of disciplines across the social sciences, and provides an important contribution to discourse about social, economic and cultural issues in today's Ireland. This makes for an original, timely and genuinely inter-disciplinary text.

In Norway, the outfields [utmark] are understood as mainly un-cultivated countryside areas such as forest and upland and make up over 70 per cent of the country’s land area. The outfields are the grounds for land uses such as grazing, forestry, hunting, fishing, recreation, wind- and hydropower production and mining.Major changes are taking place in the Norwegian outfields. Cabin construction, predators, grazing, and an increasing level of conflict between traditional and new users of these areas are causing heated debate about the use of these lands and their resources. In Utmark i endring [Outfields in Transformation], some of the country's leading social scientists in the field provide an overview of the significant changes and insight into how to further the ongoing debate about the future of these outlying areas. The use of the outfields has always been important to Norwegians. It is where weekend homes, wind power, mining and outdoor recreation are creating a certain quality of life – and workplaces. Yet these uses are also challenging our values regarding the natural environment, cultural values and traditional uses of these areas such as sheep and reindeer grazing.Changes in how these areas are valuated and used can lead to several conflicts of interest: Can traditional grazing survive the encroachment by other users and predators? How much expansion of second-home developments can the land tolerate? What should the limit be on adaptation for recreational activities? What aspects of the history of this territory do we value? The contributors to this book come from such various disciplines as geography, sociology, law, economics and philosophy – and therefore have different perspectives on the changes that are occurring. Collectively, the chapters in Utmark i endring make a significant contribution to existing research and can serve as a basis for further discussion of the challenges that businesses, individual users, and custodians of these lands face. Utmark i endring is thought-provoking reading for anyone with an interest in Norwegian land use and management, including students, researchers, business leaders and land managers. With its interesting and socially relevant content, this book is also highly relevant for the average socially engaged citizen. Utmark i endring has been edited by Frode Flemsæter, senior researcher at Ruralis and associate professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and Bjørn Egil Flø, senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO).; Det er i ferd med å skje store endringar i den norske utmarka. Kor mange fleire fritidsbustader toler utmarka?Kvar går grensa for tilrettelegging i friluftslivet?

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes wurden auf der Konferenz "Library Management und Marketing in a Multicultural World" vorgestellt, die am 16. / 17. The papers collected in this volume were presented at the conference entitled "Library Management and Marketing in a Multicultural World" in Shanghai, China from August 16-17, 2006, held under the auspices of the Marketing and Management Section of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA). This book addresses some of the latest developments in the marketing and management of libraries worldwide, recognizing the challenges to meet local needs in a global, information society. The authors used different approaches to identify trends, opportunities and needs as well as effectiveness and assessment in countries ranging from Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, Greece, India, Pakistan, Spain, the United States and elsewhere throughout the world. Several authors describe successful programs designed to promote libraries within a community, nation, or academic community. Others report on trends and changes taking place within the user community and present case studies on the response of libraries to meet challenges and opportunities - through marketing and management.

To do research that really makes a difference-the authors of this book argue-social scientists need questions and methods that reflect the complexity of the world. Bringing together a consortium of voices across a variety of fields, Methods that Matter offers compelling and successful examples of mixed methods research that do just that. In case after case, the researchers here break out of the traditional methodological silos that have long separated social science disciplines in order to better describe the intricacies of our personal and social worlds. Historically, the largest division between social science methods has been that between quantitative and qualitative measures. For people trained in psychology or sociology, the bias has been toward the former, using surveys and experiments that yield readily comparable numerical results. For people trained in anthropology, it has been toward the latter, using ethnographic observations and interviews that offer richer nuances of meaning but are difficult to compare across societies. Discussing their own endeavors to combine the quantitative with the qualitative, the authors invite readers into a conversation about the best designs and practices of mixed methodologies to stimulate creative ideas and find new pathways of insight. The result is an engaging exploration of a promising new approach to the social sciences.

"Small islands have received growing attention in the context of climate change. Rising sea-levels, intensifying storms, changing rainfall patterns and increasing temperatures force islanders to deal with and adapt to a changing climate. How do they respond to the challenge? What works, what doesn’t – and why? The present volume addresses these questions by exploring adaptation experiences in small islands across the world’s oceans from various perspectives and disciplines, including geography, anthropology, political science, psychology, and philosophy. The contributions to the volume focus on political and financial difficulties of climate change governance; highlight the importance of cultural values, local knowledge and perceptions in and for adaptation; and question to what extent mobility and migration constitute sustainable adaptation. Overall, the contributions highlight the diversity of island contexts, but also their specific challenges; they present valuable lessons for both adaptation success and failure, and emphasise island resilience and agency in the face of climate change." -- back cover.

One of California's most remarkable wetlands, Suisun Marsh is the largest tidal marsh on the West Coast and a major feature of the San Francisco Estuary. This productive and unique habitat supports endemic species, is a nursery for native fishes, and is a vital link for migratory waterfowl. The 6,000-year-old marsh has been affected by human activity, and humans will continue to have significant impacts on the marsh as the sea level rises and cultural values shift in the century ahead. This study includes in-depth information about the ecological and human history of Suisun Marsh, its abiotic and biotic characteristics, agents of ecological change, and alternative futures facing this ecosystem.
