Abstract

The ladies of Pop-Art play with art in the Bad Girl manner between Pin-Up and consumerism. These unconventional and powerful works are determined by female sexuality and lust, the post-war economic miracle and politics. Pop characterizes the humour and lightness of their attitude towards life. This book presents extraordinary women Pop artists. While it was mainly their male colleagues who have been celebrated up to the present, “Power Up – Female Pop Art” now casts light for the first time on prominent women artists. In the tension field between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, figuration and abstraction, consumerism and capitalism criticism, the works by these artists certainly resemble those by their male colleagues in terms of material, subject matter and working method. But at the same time, a specific female methodology, approach or interest is established based on exemplary works. The artists document and subjectify the post-war boom years, reflect the superficiality of consumerism and meet mass taste as pioneering feminist positions in their pithiness, monumentality, the simple vocabulary of forms as well as the gaudy choice of colours, and nevertheless remain combative, critical and extraordinary.

Abstract

Innovative and pioneering, French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) created an extensive and complex body of work over her five decade-long career. Her work received international recognition as early as 1961 when her work was included in the important exhibition 'The Art and Assemblage' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Since then Saint Phalle has been the subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide. Her bright and joyful Nana sculptures have become known as her signature artwork. The artist and her oeuvre however, can not be solely understood through this one body of work. This catalogue, accompanying the artist's first comprehensive retrospective in Belgium at Beaux-Arts Mons (BAM), explores Saint Phalle's multi-faceted practice, examining how the artist worked across a wide-range of media-painting, assemblage, sculpture, performance, public sculpture and architectural projects, film and theatre. Providing an overview of Saint Phalle's entire career, it seeks to demonstrate how the artist used her boundless imagination and unique vision of the world to transcend the space typically reserved for women to become one of the twentieth century's most important artists.

Abstract

"Known best for her exuberant, often large-scale sculptural works that celebrate the abundance and complexity of female desire, imagination, and creativity, Niki de Saint Phalle viewed making art as a ritual and a performance--a process connecting life to art. This unconventional, illuminated biography, told in the first person in Saint Phalle's voice and her own hand, dilates large and small moments in Saint Phalle's remarkable life as an artist who pointedly challenged taboos. In a kind of collaboration with the artist, Nicole Rudick has assembled a gorgeous and detailed mosaic of Saint Phalle's visual and textual works from a trove of paintings, drawings, sketches, and writings, many rare or previously unpublished. These confessions, declarations, meditations, and musings trace the most intimate contours of Saint Phalle's life. In some works, Saint Phalle articulates herself with startling candor and self-examination; in others, she carefully and slowly unwinds her secrets as she herself wrestles with them. Throughout, her agency in telling her own story is paramount."--

Abstract
