Le principal socle de l'unité de la France est un universalisme dont les présupposés ne sont pas aussi universels qu'il y paraît. L'imposition séculaire de ce « franco-universalisme », au nom et au moyen de la langue « française », est pour beaucoup dans l'asymétrie culturelle et littéraire, unique au monde, entre la Mère-Patrie et ses satellites « francophones », à commencer par la Belgique et la Suisse. C'est ce que tente de montrer ce livre en se penchant sur la presse littéraire française (1944-1960) qui, pour la première fois, fait l'objet d'une étude d'ensemble. Les discours sur la Belgique et « ses » littératures forment un analyseur puissant des enjeux symboliques et matériels qui sous-tendent les « relations littéraires » ou, mieux, les rapports de force littéraires franco-belges (franco-suisses, etc.). C'est d'abord dans la position de chaque organe de presse par rapport à ses concurrents que réside l'explication de sa tendance à produire de la violence symbolique. Ainsi, les questions de littérature comparée et d'histoire littéraire que pose ce livre ne peuvent être dissociées d'interrogations relevant de l'histoire des intellectuels et de la sociologie de la culture et de la littérature.

In this original study, Siobhán McIlvanney examines the beginnings of the women's press in France. Figurations of the Feminine is the first work in English to assess the most significant publications which make up this diverse, yet critically neglected, medium. It traces the evolving representations of womanhood that appear over the first ninety years of women's journals in France. McIlvanney's insightful readings demonstrate that these journals are often characterised by a remarkable degree of 'feminist' content. This refutes the general conception of the women's press as an idealised, hyper-feminised space inhabited by the intellectually idle - whether in the form of readers or writers - disseminating and legitimating a limited range of patriarchal stereotypes and idées reçues. Through textual analyses of different 'generic' subsections, whether the literary journal, the fashion magazine, the domestic press or more explicitly politicised outputs, Figurations of the Feminine challenges the critical commonplaces which have been applied to the women's press since its genesis, both in France and elsewhere. It demonstrates the political richness of this medium and the privileged perspectives it gives us on female self-expression and on the everyday lives of French women from across the class spectrum during this key historical period.

At once deeply historical and surprisingly timely, Having it All in the Belle Epoque shows how the debates that continue to captivate high-achieving women in America and Europe can be traced back to the early 1900's in France. The first two photographic magazines aimed at women, Femina and La Vie Heureuse created a female role model who could balance age-old convention with new equalities. Often referred to simply as the "modern woman," this captivating figure embodied the hopes and dreams as well as the most pressing internal conflicts of large numbers of French women during what was a period of profound change. Full of never-before-studied images of the modern French woman in action, Having it All shows how these early magazines exploited new photographic technologies, artistic currents, and literary trends to create a powerful model of French femininity, one that has exerted a lasting influence on French expression. This book introduces and explores the concept of Belle Epoque literary feminism, a product of the elite milieu from which the magazines emerged. Defined by its refusal of political engagement, this feminism was nevertheless preoccupied with expanding women's roles, as it worked to construct a collective fantasy of female achievement. Through an astute blend of historical research, literary criticism, and visual analysis, Mesch's study of women's magazines and the popular writers associated with them offers an original window onto a bygone era that can serve as a framework for ongoing debates about feminism, femininity, and work-life tensions.

Vendredi is een van de meest ongewone tijdschriften die de Belgische surrealisten hebben uitgebracht. Het is met de hand geschreven, werd nooit gepubliceerd en verscheen wekelijks gedurende een kleine twee jaar, van 11 november 1949 tot 5 oktober 1951. Er werden in totaal meer dan 100 nummers gemaakt door initiatiefnemer Paul Colinet, in samenwerking met o.a. René Magritte, Marcel Mariën, Louis Scutenaire, Irène Hamoir, Marcel Broodthaers en Pierre Alechinsky. Paul Colinet verstuurde het magazine op vrijdag naar zijn neef, de tekenaar Robert Willems, die toen in Belgisch Congo woonde. Deze facsimile uitgave van 900 pagina's doorslagpapier biedt een unieke getuigenis van de veelzijdigheid van het Belgisch surrealisme. Elk Vendredi-nummer is een kunstwerkje op zichzelf: de pagina's zijn prachtig geïllustreerd en bevatten handgeschreven gedichten en allerhande schrijfels, nieuwtjes, grappen, tekeningen, collages en krantenknipsels. Met een inleiding van Xavier Canonne, een inventaris en biografieën van alle deelnemende kunstenaars. In de Koninklijke Bibliotheek zal deze herfst een selectie uit de 100 Vendredi-nummers tentoongesteld worden.
