Abstract

Abstract

After burning up the blacktop in New Mexico with The Fast Red Road and rewriting Indian history on the Great Plains with The Bird is Gone, Stephen Graham Jones now takes us to Montana. Set on a Blackfeet Indian reservation, the life of one Indian boy, Doby Saxon, is laid bare through the eyes of those who witness it: his near-death experience, his suicide attempts, his brief glimpse of victory, and the unnecessary death of one of his best friends. But through Doby there emerges a connection to the past, to an Indian Agent who served the United States

Abstract

First Nations peoples believe the eagle flies with a female wing and a male wing, showing the importance of balance between the feminine and the masculine in all aspects of individual and community experiences. Centuries of colonization, however, have devalued the traditional roles of First Nations women, causing a great gender imbalance that limits the abilities of men, women, and their communities in achieving self-actualization.Restoring the Balance brings to light the work First Nations women have performed, and continue to perform, in cultural continuity and community development. It illustrates the challenges and successes they have had in the areas of law, politics, education, community healing, language, and art, while suggesting significant options for sustained improvement of individual, family, and community well-being. Written by fifteen Aboriginal scholars, activists, and community leaders, Restoring the Balance combines life histories and biographical accounts with historical and critical analyses grounded in traditional thought and approaches. It is a powerful and important book.

Abstract

This critical edition delivers a unique and comprehensive collection of the works of Ktunaxa-Secwepemc writer and educator Vera Manuel, daughter of prominent Indigenous leaders Marceline Paul and George Manuel. A vibrant force in the burgeoning Indigenous theatre scene, Vera was at the forefront of residential school writing and did groundbreaking work as a dramatherapist and healer. Long before mainstream Canada understood and discussed the impact and devastating legacy of Canada's Indian residential schools, Vera Manuel wrote about it as part of her personal and community healing. She became a grassroots leader addressing the need to bring to light the stories of survivors, their journeys of healing, and the therapeutic value of writing and performing arts. A collaboration by four Indigenous writers and scholars steeped in values of Indigenous ethics and editing practices, the volume features Manuel's most famous play, "Strength of Indian Women"-first performed in 1992 and still one of the most important literary works to deal with the trauma of residential schools-along with an assemblage of plays, written between the late 1980s until Manuel's untimely passing in 2010, that were performed but never before published. The volume also includes three previously unpublished short stories written in 1988, poetry written over three decades in a variety of venues, and a 1987 college essay that draws on family and community interviews on the effects of residential schools.

Abstract

The contemporary legal system, which has prevailed in the Western world since the 19th century, has cemented a discourse and its own way of conceiving the legal sphere. Since the end of the 18th century, legalistic and dogmatic currents have relegated the legal culture of the Ancien Régime, so finely recreated by the jurists of the ius comunne. Thus, that plural and casuistic law was confined to the shelves of libraries and the shelves of archives. Using the language, doctrinal works and documents of that modern era, Víctor Tau Anzoátegui invites us to rediscover the spirit and culture in which a law was forged that was completely different from today's law. The work, divided into three main sections, explores the beliefs, ideas and mentalities of the men who developed Indian Law. To do so, it probes into the complex and varied Spanish-American society in order to unravel the criteria of a system that prevailed beyond the three centuries of Castilian rule. Casuismo y sistema is a key work for understanding a legal culture that is not limited to the laws, but which overflows and permeates an entire judicial culture; it also invites us to delve deeper into extremely topical lines of research that seek to understand the very structures of power. In short, the validity of this book invites us to rethink that nineteenth-century dogmatic redoubt on which the present-day world was attempted to be built.
