Ten conversations on current issues and timeless aspects of architecture form an inspirational reader for both professionals and anyone with an interest in architecture. Sergison Bates architects, established in 1996 and today running offices in London, Zurich, and Brussels, have made a name for themselves with projects ranging from housing to care homes, from educational and cultural institutions to urban-scale regeneration designs. Since the outset, the partners have engaged with the debate within the professions and have curated a number of exhibitions about the themes they explore in their teaching and practice. This book features ten conversations Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, and Mark Tuff have conducted with prominent Swiss-based architects, historians, and researchers and in which they reflect with their guests on the many aspects of making, teaching, and writing architecture. Toipcs and guests include: Learning from the European City (Roger Diener), The Provocation of Sustainability (Sascha Roesler), Rethinking Housing Conventions (Jean-Paul Jaccaud), Learning from the Recent Past (Stanislaus von Moos), Thinking and Writing (Martin Steinmann), Exploring Construction (Roger Boltshauser), Shaping Public Space (Maria Conen and Raoul Sigl), Finding and Repurposing (Elisabeth and Martin Boesch), Lessons from Teaching (Ludovica Molo), and Working Methods (Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan). The lively dialogues draw shared experiences in practice, teaching, and research, and form an inspirational reader for anyone with a deeper interest in architectural practice.

For many years renowned British architect Jonathan Sergison has been combining practical work with academic teaching. In this new book he offers personal views on the interplay between these two spheres and the great significance he sees in combining them. At the core of Practice / Teaching is a programmatic conversation on the topic with Sergison, conducted by architect and theoretician Irina Davidovici. In addition, the book offers four previously unpublished texts by Sergison, in which he explores the topic from various perspectives, based on his profound experience both as a practising architect and as a teacher. Published to coincide with an exhibit curated by Sergison at this year's 16th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, 26 May - 25 November 2018.

This instalment of a.mag magazine focuses on two British practices: Jonathan Woolf and Sergison Bates. Editor Ana Leal uses the word “serendipity” to refer to their respective bodies of work, describing how “the reinterpretation of the site, to acknowledge the culture and tradition of the place through local materials and techniques, is a clear example of an answer to contemporary needs… dictated by an extraordinary sensitivity.” Established in 1996, Sergison Bates architects have earned a reputation as one of London’s leading architectural practices. A second office was opened in Zurich in 2010. Both tackle a wide range of international projects, ranging from urban planning to regeneration, public buildings, housing, and private residences. This publication features projects that are informed by a sensitive approach to place, the experiential potential of materials and construction, and a concern for the environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainability. It is architecture that is both contemporary and rooted in the context, and reflects the partners’ commitment to a research-based approach. Along with the highlighted projects it includes a conversation with Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, and Tony Fretton. Featured are Woolf’s Lion Rooms, Lost Villa, and Brick Leaf House, as well as various urban and suburban housing projects by Sergison Bates.
